Suffragettes - Emily Davison original contemporaneous memorial leaflet issued after the death of Emily Davison^ who was killed after throwing herself under the King`s horse at the Derby on June 4th 1913 - perhaps the most infamous event in the whole history of the fight for women`s suffrage. 8vo 4pp featuring a portrait of Emily to front. In near mint condition. Extremely rare. The leaflet carries a notice for the Memorial Service to be held on June 14th 1913 at St George`s Church^ Bloomsbury^ listing the clergy involved and the hymns to be sung. The two inside pages carries an essay entitled `Why did she stop the King`s Horse ?` and explaining unequivocally that she did indeed intend to kill herself by throwing herself under the horse: `...with her clear and unflinching vision she realised that now^ as in days of old^ to awake the conscience of the people^ a human life would be needed as sacrifice...` Today there is debate that Emily`s death was more an accident - that she didn`t intend to throw herself under the horse^ but her real intention was merely to disrupt the race.

Worcestershire - William III attractive document issued in the name of William III c1690s^ being an exemplification of a recovery for lands in Worcestershire^ featuring a fine and very large calligraphic introduction in Latin^ with the Royal Coat of Arms contained within an elaborated engraved initial letter `G`[for `Gugliemus`]. Document slightly dusty and lacking seal but an attractive document from the reign of William III. This was probably issued shortly after the death of Mary II in 1694^ and usual double portrait of the join monarchs has been replaced by the Royal Coat of Arms - it is probable that the original portrait was no longer valid but it was too early for the sole portrait of William III to have been engraved

Opkomts, Midden, en Geen Eynde van den door Trapte Jan Lauw This engraving is from the important account of one the most infamous financial meltdowns in history, known as the Mississippi Bubble incident. A medallion with a portrait of Law appears at top, surrounded by spider webs, snakes, thorns, and fishing rods. Sixteen additional vignettes show scenes from John Law`s career.John Law, a Scottish financier, established the Banque Generale (central bank) in France. He was then granted control of Louisiana and founded the Compagnie de la Louisiane d`Occident, in 1717. Law developed an elaborate plan to exploit the fabulous resources of the region, which quickly gained popularity and people rushed to invest, not just in France, but throughout Europe. This resulted in the development of several other overseas companies, such as the English South Sea Company and a number of smaller companies in the Dutch Republic. The share prices rose dramatically in a frenzy of speculation. In 1720 the bubble burst; speculators cashed in, caused a run on the shares, and the company went bankrupt. As a consequence of the failure, confidence in other similar companies failed, and thousands of individual investors across Europe were ruined.See also lot 7 for a portrait of John Law.
