English School, early 18th century, oil on canvas laid on board - half length portrait of a Gentleman in red coat, painted within an oval, 74cm x 61cm, in period carved giltwood frameCondition report: The work has been stuck down on a piece of hardboard, some areas are not as flat as they could be. There are areas of overpainting and some scratching to the paint in the lower left corner. The frame has some losses. All that being said, the work still has a good look and could be hung straight away. Please see close up images to illustrate the issues.
19th century French School oil on canvas- half length portrait of a young lady, unframed. 47 x 38cm.Condition report: Please note that this picture is now described as 19th century and not 18th century as before. There are numerous scratches and scuffs across the surface which can be seen in the images. Stretcher marks visible on all four sides. There is no apparent overpainting visible under a uv light.
Janos Marschalko (1819-1877) oil on canvas portrait of an artist, signed. 65cm x 54cm. Believed to be a self-portrait by this Hungarian ArtistCondition report: Condition generally good overall. The work has been re-lined and some evidence of overpainting restoration on the outer edges. A slight dent and scuff to the paint on the lower edge, showing white in the images.
17th century English School, oil on canvas, Portrait of Sir Thomas Craig of Riccarton 1538-1608, holding a scroll, titled, 60.5 x 74cm, in period carved gilt frame. NB:Sir Thomas Craig of Riccarton (c. 1538-1608) was a notable Scottish jurist and poet. In 1564, he was appointed justice-depute. In this capacity he presided at many of the criminal trials of the period in Edinburgh. He was well known for his poetry and his 1603 ‘Jus Feudale’. This book was the first comprehensive legal treatise to be written in Scotland and its object was to assimilate the laws of England and Scotland, but, instead of this, it was an important factor in building up and solidifying the law of Scotland into a separate system.Provenance: Removed from The Garden House, HampsteadCondition report: Re-lined and restored in 1955 as per the label verso. Some overpainting on the outer edges visible under a UV light and the dates look to have been strengthened on the top right corner when the restoration was carried out. ENGLISH SCHOOL - 19TH CENTURY; oil on canvas, portrait of Richard Rippon (1767-1835), 126cm x 100cm, framed.PROVENANCE: By descent of the Buckney family. This portrait is featured on Page 49 (Plate 1) of ‘Edward John Dent and his Successors’, by Vaudrey Mercer.Richard Rippon was the cousin of Edward John Dent, the celebrated chronometer and clockmaker responsible for building the largest and most accurate public clock in the world known as Big Ben. Dent learnt his skills as a maker of watches and clocks at the beginning of his career from Richard Rippon, who was an expert watchmaker.Following his death Elizabeth Rippon married Edward John Dent – the founder of E. Dent & Co Ltd. His stepson Frederick William (Rippon) Dent completed the construction of Big Ben.Additional InformationVerso there is a label for 'Conservation Matters' dated 2002/3. Tears to the canvas were carried out by Richard Watkins and the painting was relined onto linen. The frame was conserved by Yvonne Jarzebowska. (Please see images of this label)The painting has some craqueleur, some edge wear, a small white paint spot to the lower right and a small chip to the lower left. The right ear of the sitter may also have some later painting.

A late 19th century Continental porcelain oval plaque painted with the head and shoulders portrait of a young girl wearing a white ruff and bonnet, indistinct impressed mark to the reverse, 8 x 6.25cm, framed, also a decorative small circular portrait miniature signed Nived (2).Additional InformationThe porcelain plaque is in good condition, very much in the style of a portrait miniature. The circular miniature is also in good condition with a few small scuffs to the frame.
An interesting early 20th century autograph album including signatures of Sir Ernest Shackleton dated February 1910, Clara Butt the singer, William Booth founder of the Salvation Army, Andrew Carnegie American philanthropist who largely funded the Torquay library, T.R. Allison founder of Hovis, Dame Nellie Melba singer, Marie Corelli novelist and Colonel Charles R Burn MP who entered parliament on 3rd December 1910 representing Torquay.The vendor's great grandfather was a portrait photographer on 34 Union Street in Torquay with the business being retained within the family. J.C. Dinham was awarded a Royal Warrant in 1907 and several of his images have been donated to the National Portrait Gallery and Devon Heritage. The vendor's mother was also a professional singer and used the album to record the leading musicians of the time with whom she performed circa 1950-1960.
