Ca. early 3rd century AD.A gold ring consisting of a round hoop adorned with ribbed details. The bezel of the ring is embellished with a beaded border and houses a captivating garnet intaglio, which showcases a finely engraved portrait of either Emperor Geta or Caracalla. The figure is depicted facing towards the right, with a prominent nose, large expressive eyes, and slightly parted lips. Fleshy cheeks and a small chin contribute to the overall facial structure, enhancing the portrayal's realism. The figure's head is crowned with curly hair, adding an element of texture and intricacy to the overall composition. Emperor Geta and Caracalla were both prominent figures in ancient Roman history, known for their roles in the ruling dynasty of the Severan dynasty. They were the sons of Emperor Septimius Severus and held joint rule for a brief period following their father's death. However, their relationship was characterized by intense rivalry and animosity. Caracalla ultimately orchestrated the assassination of his brother Geta, solidifying his own sole rule as the Roman Emperor. Size: D: 16.92mm / US: 6 1/2 / UK: M 1/2; 3.31g Provenance: Private UK collection; From an old London collection formed in the 1990s.
Ca. 1-200 AD. A convex intaglio with a portrait of the legendary figure Hercules. This captivating depiction captures the essence of the hero through a masterful portrayal of his countenance. The bust of Hercules, rendered in his left profile, reveals an array of intricate details, including impeccably sculpted hair, a luxuriant beard, penetrating eyes that emanate depth and intensity, and a broad nose that contributes to his powerful visage. Hercules, also known as Herakles in Greek mythology, held great significance as a hero revered for his extraordinary strength and numerous heroic exploits. In Roman glyptic art, Hercules was often depicted in various scenes and poses, representing his iconic labours, his divine parentage as the son of Zeus, and his association with physical prowess and valour. The accompanying gold ring, possibly originating from a later period, features a round and slender hoop design that exudes elegance and refinement. The embellished shoulders of the ring add a touch of opulence, enhancing its overall aesthetic appeal. Size: D: 18.14mm / US: 8 / UK: P 1/2; 6.63g Provenance: Private UK collection; From an old London collection formed in the 1990s.
