Ray writes in a business-like manner regarding the sales of his works, apologising for writing in English ('in which language I can express myself more shortly') and referring to an agreement he had entered into with his correspondent in 1959, which had led him 'to believe that I would be freed from all matters of keeping accounts and from endless discussions', continuing to rectify several points raised in his correspondent's recent letters, in part, 'Our contract gives you control of world sales, and the exhibitions in New York were arranged with the approval of the Galerie Rive Droite….To date no accounts have been given me of transactions….Among other activities in New York I was responsible for selling a watercolour for $400, as well as some drawings at a good price….In your second letter you say you haven't taken paintings to cover the contract. I have receipts for all the works you have taken which exceed what you have paid me. You admit you haven't paid me the four millions due in 1961. The contract stipulates three millions to be paid over the period…..I cannot go into details here, since you promised to keep accounts for me. Anyhow, your small investment in me has paid off already, I'm sure. And will continue to pay. I have done much more than you in the way of publicity: interviews, radio and television in France and abroad, as well as participating in non-commercial official exhibitions. In 59, before our contract I consigned only the Orateur to Loeb, asking him only 300.00 francs for it. He did not sell it because he probably asked a couple of thousand dollars for it, and I took it back. I sold it to you for 200.00 frs. as an object, although I have always considered it as important as any painting. But I wasn't going to argue with you - I counted on the future. So, the contract is void as from today.' A couple of very light, extremely minor corner creases, VG

George Engleheart (London 1750-1829)A portrait miniature of a gentleman said to be Theobold Wolfe Tone (1763-1798), wearing a blue coat, white waistcoat, stock and tied cravat, his wig powdered. Watercolour on ivory, gold frame, the reverse with a navette-shaped hairwork compartment, within a surround of blue glass studded with eight rose-cut diamonds. Oval, 51mm (2in) highFootnotes:Theobald Wolfe Tone, posthumously known as Wolfe Tone was a leading Irish revolutionary figure and one of the founding members of the United Irishmen in Belfast and Dublin, a republican society determined to end British rule, and achieve accountable government. Throughout his political career, Tone was involved in a number of military engagements against the British navy. He was active in drawing Irish Catholics and Protestants together in the United cause, and in soliciting French assistance for a general insurrection. In November 1798, on his second attempt to land in Ireland with French troops and supplies, he was captured by British naval forces. The United Irish risings of the summer had already been crushed. Tone died in advance of his scheduled execution, probably, as modern scholars generally believe, by his own hand. Later generations were to regard Tone as the father of Irish Republicanism and his grave in Bodenstown, County Kildare, is the site of annual commemorations. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: Y ФY Subject to CITES regulations when exporting items outside of the UK, see clause 13.Ф This lot contains or is made of ivory and cannot be imported into the USA or any country within the EU.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Frances travelled with her husband throughout his entire tour of duty across America, Continental Europe and eventually Ceylon. In 1781, the Doyles were captured together with Lord Rawdon when sailing home to England aboard the 'Cormorant'. In his Journal entry for 27 September, Baron von Closen referred to a rumour from America of Mrs Doyle's affair with Lord Rawdon and how he found Lieutenant-Colonel Doyle to have been 'a very easy-going fellow', suggesting that the affair might have been accepted by her husband. After several negotiations, Lieutenant-Colonel Doyle was exchanged for 'Sieur Ternan' and the Doyles finally reached English soil in 1782.Despite the alleged affair with Rawdon, Frances and Welbore went on to have three children. Their sons, Francis Hastings (1783-1839) and Carlo (b.1787) both became Major Generals in the army. The former became a baronet in 1828. The latter was born whilst the Doyles were stationed in Warsaw. Their third child, Charlotte Elizabeth was born in London in 1789.Welbore died in Ceylon just six months after being posted there as a Commander-in-Chief. Frances returned to England where she later married the exiled Prince Joseph of Monaco (1763–1816), second son of the Sovereign Prince of Monaco, Honoré III. The couple did not have any children.
