A good pearlware plaque of John Wesley, c.1800, the rectangular form printed with an oval portrait of the cleric reading a religious text, titled 'Reverend John Wesley, MA, Aged 87', the moulded frame edged in black, 21cm. The print follows an engraving by William Ridley (1764-1838) after a miniature by R Arnold (fl.1770-1810). Provenance: from the collection of the late Reverend John J Perry.
Three Russian porcelain Easter eggs, 19th/20th century, one Imperial Factory St Petersburg and painted with a portrait of Saint Sergei of Radonezh, his arms folded across his chest, reserved on a gilt ground, incised 34 to the base, another painted with a portrait of St Eugenia with hands clasped around a rosary, titled in gilt above the painting, the last with a portrait of Jesus and the initials of the Paschal greeting to the reverse, one damaged and restored, 11cm max. A rare biographical script portrait of John Wesley, c.1885, printed after Glück Rosenthal, the portrait drawn using a continuous calligraphic script of his life taken from Richard Watson's 1831 biography, together with a printed transcript and six other prints relating to Wesley and Methodism. (7) Cf. Proceedings of the Wesley Historical Society, Vol. XIX, 1933-34 for a history of the picture, only a handful of copies of which remain. Provenance: from the collection of the late Reverend John J Perry.
A small collection of commemorative ceramics relating to John Wesley, 19th/early 20th century, including a pearlware sugar bowl and cover and a milk jug, printed with a portrait of Wesley and with the Centenary Hall, a Wood & Sons, Burslem plate commemorating the 1907 Primitive Methodist Centenary, a creamware jug and a porter mug printed with varying portraits of Wesley, a similarly decorated pearlware cup and saucer, and a lustre goblet applied with a figure reading, some damages, 24cm max. A 19th century Sevres porcelain topped gilt bronze table The circular top centred with a portrait roundel of Louis XVI, bordered with eight female portrait roundels, the underside inscribed with the name of each sitter, the base headed with three lion masks over three monopodic uprights with paw feet united with an undertier. 52.5 cm diameter. CONDITION REPORTS: Top with rivetted repair, some gilt and paint wear/loss, some gilt wear to base, some elements of base loose, general wear.
2nd century AD. A bronze ring with thin D-section hoop widening to the shoulder; oval bezel with high relief portrait of the Empress Faustina the Younger, hair pulled back into a bun. 9.54 grams, 22.55 overall, 16.48mm internal diameter (approximate size British M, USA 6, Europe 16 1/2, Japan 12) (7/8"). Property of a London, UK collector; acquired London market, 1990s. Fine condition.
2nd century AD. An oolitic limestone, slightly larger than life, bust of the Emperor Caracalla, head turned to the left, showing curly hair, beard and with an intense gaze with squared off base; of provincial workmanship. See Sear, David, Roman Coins, volume II, Spink 2002, pp.502-545 for many coin portrait examples.30.3 kg, 55cm tall (20cm chin to brow) (21 3/4"). Property of a London lady; by inheritance; formerly acquired by her father in Europe in the 1940s. The features of the bust bear a striking resemblance to to the portraits seen on the coinage of Caracalla (198-217 AD); the limestone possibly being quarried in the mountainous regions of the Balkans. Named Lucius(?) Septimus Bassianus, Caracalla (born 4 April 188 at Lugdunum) was eldest son of Emperor Septimius Severus of the Severan dynasty; Caracalla, with his family, including his brother Geta, arrived in Britain in 208 AD where they campaigned until the death of Septimius in 211 AD. After this, the brothers fell into dispute until Geta was murdered while attending a meeting of reconciliation with his brother in December the same year; Caracalla then slaughtered thousands of 'supporters' of Geta before campaigning in Germany; eventually being assassinated in 217 AD. Very fine condition.
125-70 BC. Posthumous issue, Odessus mint, magistrate Lakon. Obv: head of Herakles right, Mithridatic portrait type, wearing lionskin headdress. Rev: BASILEWS ALEXANDROY legend with Zeus seated left on backless stool, holding eagle and sceptre; LA in left field, ODH in exergue. Price 1191; AMNG 2174.16.09 grams. Near extremely fine.
44 BC. Rome mint. Obv: CAESAR IMP legend with laureate head of Julius Caesar right, lituus and simpulum behind head. Rev: M METTIVS legend with Venus standing left, holding Victory and sceptre, resting elbow on a shield placed on a globe; issue letter G in left field. Mettia 4; Julia 32; Cr 480/3; RSC 34; Syd 1056; Sear -. See Wildwinds.com (this coin"). 3.54 grams. Marcus Mettius was a military lieutenant of Julius Caesar; this is the earliest of Caesar's portrait types. Very fine. Very rare.
6th-7th century AD. A restrung necklace of small lapis lazuli beads with oval spacer beads between; to one end a fan-shaped lapis lazuli bead; to the other a gold solidus of a Byzantine emperor with portrait wearing diadem and chlamys; to the reverse a cross on orb; hook-and-eye clasp to the side. 27 grams, 51cm (20"). From an old European collection; acquired 1980-1990. Very fine condition.
