An 18th century portrait of “Gentleman in formal attire”, “Lock family of East Sussex”., believed to be by Peter Toms R.A. (1726-1777), oil on canvas, showing a gentleman seated with a glass and decanter on table, framed 84cmWx105cmH including frame, (see previous lot for valuation report from 1992. Peter Toms was a founding member of the Royal Academy and was a specialist drapery painter for other artists. He worked with Francis Cotes, Sir Joshua Reynolds and Benjamin West, amongst others. A particular work by Sir Joshua Reynolds ‘Portrait of Lady Elizabeth Keppel’, one considered one of his best, was finished by Peter Toms in his fashion. Provenance: Also see the following lot. Christine Partington (British 20th century), portrait of Private James Ellaway, First Batallion, Grenadier Guards WWI. Signed with monogram, pastels. 45 x 57 cm approx. Provenance: consigned from his family. It seems that James Ellaway served in the Grenadier Guards and the Welsh Guards becoming a Corporal field medic. He was captured by the Germans. He lived in Cwmbran before the war. He survived and this portrait was made from an original hand-touched photograph. It is believed he died in the 1930's at a relatively young age.(B.P. 21% + VAT) In good condition and is included with a photocopy of a letter from James Ellaway.
