After Sir Joshua Reynolds, PRA, FRSA, 1723-1792 (English),Portrait of Andrew Grote, half length, wearing a wig and brown coatoil on canvas76xm x 62cmAndrew Grote was one of the founder members of Prescot, Grote, Culverdale & Hollingsworth private bank in Threadneedle Street in 1766. This eventually became a constituent bank of NatWest.Inscribed on note to reverse.Believed to be circa 1830-40 (Cowen & Waring Caoutchouc canvas)Condition reportSurface of canvas is very dirty with what I assume is nicotine. The surface is lightly cracked as I would expect for a portrait of this age, but the canvas appears to be generally good. There is a 3 inch apparent repair on left edge about a third of the way up. Under black light the repaint is clear. There is also some signs of repainting above his right shoulder. The face and coat seem to be unaffected, apart from very small scuff of repaint on right side of the wig. As I said in the note this appears to be a later copy. With a little cleaning and some better framing it will make a handsome portrait.
Various wall hanging pictures and prints etc. to include an oval, late 18th century-style framed, oil on canvas still life study of flowers, one other ornately framed floral still life print, a Hogarth framed and glazed and hand-coloured coaching engraving, a silver framed coloured silkwork depicting a Georgian party and one further, smaller early mid 19th century gilt framed and glazed oval portrait study of a military-style gentleman with white powdered wig and black tunic (5)

Brod, Max (Prag 1884 - 1968 Tel Aviv). Eigenhändiger Brief an Unbekannt.
