Los 6650

Manner of Ammi Phillips (American 1788-1865): Portrait of Lady in a Blue Dress, oil on canvas bearing inscription 'Galasso Pinxit 1855', 66cm x 50cmNotes: Phillips was a self-taught artist who was constantly developing his skills as he moved around America, formulating his style to what was popular in an area. For this reason, he did not often sign his work and thus many of his portraits have been misattributed to other artists, particularly due to subtle changes in his technique and his own personal development in portraiture. Various features are instantly recognisable as in the style of Phillips - for instance the framing of the face using stark white collars, often in lace for women. The upright position of the sitter, the muted and dark tones used, and the setting of their dark eyes among round features can all be considered as signature characteristics of a Phillips portrait.
