Cadell, 1776-88.⁂ Philip Sassoon (1888-1939), a patron of the arts was Chairman of the Trustees of the National Gallery (1933-35) and Minister for Works in the 1930s, giving both private and public commissions to artists such as Rex Whistler, Edwin Lutyens and John Singer Sargent.

Africa.- Thomson (Joseph) To the Central African Lakes and Back, 2 vol., first edition, half-title, mounted photographic portrait frontispieces (vol. 1, laid down), 2 folding colour maps, both with small areas of loss and laid down, ink stamp erased from verso titles, 32pp. publishers' catalogue at end vol. 2, original cloth bound in, modern half morocco, gilt, 1881; and another by the same, 8vo (3)⁂ Thomson was a Scottish geologist and explorer who accompanied Alexander Keith Johnston on his expedition to establish a route from Dar es Salaam to Lake Nyasa and Lake Taganyika. Johnston died during the trip and Thomson took over leadership of the expedition, travelling 3,000 miles in 14 months.
Canada.- Cartwright (George) A Journal of Transactions and Events, during a Residence of nearly Sixteen Years on the Coast of Labrador..., 3 vol. in 1, first edition, engraved portrait frontispiece of the author visiting his fox-traps (lightly offset on title), list of subscribers, 2 large folding engraved maps (some tears neatly repaired), light staining to a few leaves, 3D1 with paper flaw tear to lower margin, unobtrusive embossed library stamp to a couple of leaves, a good uncut copy on large paper with wide margins, bound in handsome modern dark blue straight-grain morocco with gilt-tooled borders of Greek key and leafy sprays, spine gilt in compartments with five double raised bands, uncut, [Sabin 11150], 4to, Newark, 1792. ⁂ Cartwright was a British officer who made six expeditions to Newfoundland and Labrador between 1770 and 1786, hunting and trapping. His account includes descriptions of the animals, particularly foxes and beavers, and the native Indians and Eskimos. Please note: Lot 183 – this appears to be a made-up copy with the frontispiece portrait, title and folding maps mounted on stubs, and the portrait (which is on thicker paper) and the ‘Explanation of the Frontispiece’ leaf being shorter
Ceylon.- Fellowes (Robert) and Robert Knox. The History of Ceylon, 2 parts in 1, first edition, engraved portrait frontispiece, folding map (with short repaired tear), 15 engraved plates (browned), occasional foxing, bookplate of E. Walcott, contemporary dark blue half morocco, gilt, spine gilt, 4to, 1817.⁂ A very good copy of this comprehensive history of the island from ancient times to 1815, with details of religion, laws, domestic economy, fauna and flora and a chapter on pearl fishing. Part 2, by Ronald Knox, include an account of the rebellion in which he was captured, imprisoned and later escaped.
Printing plate.- Schulze (Christian Gottfried, 1749-1819) Portrait of Prince Alexander Mikhailovich Beloselsky, after Giovanni Battista Casanova (1728-1795) and Jacob Seydelmann (1750-1829), original copper plate with etching and engraving, plate 630 x 420 mm. (24 3/4 x 16 1/2 in), light abrasion in places, unframed, [circa 1770-1800].
van Dyck (Anthony, 1599-1641), after. Portrait of Sir Kenelm Digby, half-length, red conté crayon with traces of graphite, on cream laid paper without watermark, 210 x 185 mm. (8 1/4 x 7 1/4 in), arched tops, tipped onto paper support, with old ink inscription, unframed, [probably late 17th to 18th century]. ⁂ A competent early study, after the engraving published in 'Icones Principum Virorum', 1630s. Digby, the seventeenth century English courtier, diplomat and natural philosopher, was described in John Pointer's Oxoniensis Academia, 1749, as the 'Magazine of all Arts and Sciences, or (as one stiles him) the Ornament of this Nation'.
Ovid. Les Metamorphoses, translated by Pierre Du-Ryer, second edition, half-title, title in red and black with engraved vignette incorporating portrait of Ovid, 124 engraved illustrations in text by Crispijn van de Passe the elder and his children Magdalena and Crispijn the younger, Martin and Paul Bouche and others after various artists including Rubens (p.83), Pp1 with large repaired tear, modern dark blue morocco, gilt, by Alexander McGuckin, spine gilt in compartments, folio, Brussels, Francois Foppens, 1677.⁂ A very handsome copy of this edition, which first appeared in 1655.
Cervantès Saavedra (Miguel de) The Life and Exploits of the ingenious gentleman Don Quixote de la Mancha, translated by Charles Jarvis, 2 vol., first edition of the Jarvis translation, engraved frontispiece and 68 plates (including a portrait of the author by George Virtue) most by Gerard van der Gucht after John Vanderbank, includes 'A Supplement to the Translator's Preface' by William Warburton and 'Advertisement concerning the Prints' by John Oldfield, occasional light browning, contemporary calf, joints cracked, rubbed and rather worn, [Palau 52479], 4to, for J. and R. Tonson, and R. Dodsley, 1742. ⁂ 'bella y sumptuosa edicion' (Palau). A richly illustrated edition, which 'is generally acknowledged as being close in spirit to the original.' (ODNB).
A German Berlin Porcelain Plaque, late 19th century, painted with a bust portrait of Beatrice Cenci after Guido Reni, the young noblewoman wearing a white turban and gown. Impressed marks to rear 18 with pencil marks. Housed within a later ornate gilt scrolled frame. Measures 11cms by 8cms not including frame.
A 19th century German biscuit porcelain Portrait statue of George Frideric Handel holding a hat. Impressed to the socle with ' G. F. Haendel ', impressed mark to the base full-length, artist unknown wearing full dress and a wig. Unglazed, along with a ceramic bust of William Shakespeare on pedestal base by Samson Highest measures 28 cm.
