A Bohemian uranium glass oil lamp featuring an opaline green body and font, each adorned with finely painted oval portrait medallions of classical male and female figures. The portraits are surrounded by ornate gilded scrollwork and diamond-shaped motifs along the font. The base rests on a cast metal stand with paw feet and acanthus designs. A pair of Wedgwood black basalt plaques, 19th century, of the Marriage of Cupid and Psyche, each modelled by John Flaxman with four putti, four small basalt portrait plaques of Classical figures and poets including Posidippus and Antinous, and two further portrait plaques of Georgian gentlemen, unmarked, 9.2cm max. A rare Wedgwood American subject black basalt intaglio seal, late 18th century, the small oval form bearing a profile portrait of Captain Nathan Hale beside the reversed inscription 'My Country!!!', the reverse impressed 'Wedgwood', 2.4cm.Captain Nathan Hale was a Connecticut-born schoolteacher who worked as a spy against the British during the Revolutionary War. He was captured by the British in 1776 and hanged on 22nd September 1776 at the age of 21. His final words were reputed to be, "I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country." Hale has long been considered an American hero and was designated the state hero of Connecticut in 1985. Josiah Wedgwood was a known American sympathiser, likely due in no small part to trade links. Nevertheless, Hale was a controversial figure in Britain and this seal may have been a single commission or limited production for a few trusted like-minded thinkers.
A rare political creamware jug, 2nd half 18th century, the barrel shape painted in red and black with a portrait of John Wilkes, with feathery scrolls around, a band of impressed ovals to the rim and foot, with a mask jug, a restored crack, 15.5cm.John Wilkes (1725-1798) was a notorious rake, who exposed the scandals of the Hell Fire Club after being expelled from their membership. In issue 45 of his publication, The North Briton, Wilkes' attack on George III's 1763 speech endorsing the Paris Peace Treaty earned him a warrant for his arrest for libel. With strong public support, Wilkes was cleared by the Lord Chief Justice.
John I Smart (1741-1811), fine portrait miniature on ivory of a gentleman in green coat, signed with initials and dated 1778, oval, approximately 3.7 x 3cm, in ornate blue glass and carved giltwood frame with hair locket to reverse. APHA Ref: 6G6V7GJBThe portrait is in good condition, the frame has a crack on the very top, the gilt is wearing in parts
William Douglas (1780-1832) portrait miniature on ivory depicting three children, apparently unsigned, 18 x 12cm, in glazed ormolu mounted frame. APHA Ref: T552F3B5Not examined out of the glazed frame. Ivory panel appears to be ok and flat. There appears to be a certain degree of fading, some dust and debris under glass and a few stains to paint surface - see images.
Edwardian heart shaped double sided locket in diamond frame with sapphire ribbon surmount, the reverse containing a portrait miniature on ivory, 33mm, on a Victorian gold snake link chain, 41cm long, in a Victorian red leather heart shaped box. APHA Ref: 12NRTY7BVery good condition commensurate with age. No obvious signs of any damage or repairs. Stones are all original to the locket. The back of the locket opens and closes correctly. Weighs approximately 11.9 grams. Leather box in good condition commensurate with age.
Good quality mid-19th century painted portrait miniature on ivory, depicting Clandine Henriette Louise, daughter of Karel Siradus Willem Graf Van Hogendorf, and wife of Thomas Hinton Campbell' oval, 5.5 x 4cm, in glazed gilded locket setting with engraved inscription and presented in folding leather case. APHA Ref: Q3NYUHSZ Their is some slight peeling to the gold plate as seen in images, the portrait it's self is in good condition. The leather case is also in good condition with slight signs of wear, their are no signs of restoration or cleaning and no evidence of warping or cracking to the ivory.
