Duck (Stephen) - Poems on Several Occasions, first edition, without engraved portrait present in later editions, woodcut ornaments, list of subscribers including Pope, Swift, Horace Walpole and others, with the final leaf `Ode to the Prince and Princess of Wales` (errata slip pasted at foot), contemporary ink signature of M.Hervey at head of title and with her engraved bookplate, also bookplate of Robert J.Hayhurst, title lightly browned, contemporary mottled calf, red morocco label, rubbed, joints split, spine ends and corners a little worn, 4to, for the Author, 1736. Stephen Duck (c.1705-1756), was an agricultural labourer who wrote verse and was taken up by Queen Caroline. He became the resident hermit and Keeper of the Queen`s Library, housed in Merlin`s Cave at Richmond Lodge. Lady Mary Hervey (c.1699-1768), née Lepell, wife of John Hervey, later Lord Hervey of Ickworth, Suffolk, who appears in the list of subcribers.

He initiated the Hundred Days' Reform, but was abruptly stopped when Cixi launched a coup in 1898, after which he was put under house arrest until his death.
