Smith 1854', oil on canvas96 x 75cmProvenance: Wood Hall, Arkesden, Essex.Condition report: Oil on canvas which is unlined. The canvas tension is poor and there are severe undulations running vertically down the painting. At the lower edge are two old holes which have been repaired from the reverse with canvas patches. There is more recent damage to the canvas with associated paint loss, including a hole on the sitter's arm. The paint layer is in a good condition. There is a thin varnish layer which is semi-matte, clear and even. There are scattered accretions and surface dirt on top of the varnish. Old gilt frame has been painted with gold paint.

Peder Severin Krøyer (Danish, 1851-1909)Portrait of Vibeke Kroyer, the artist's daughtersigned lower left with initials 'SK'pastel48 x 38cmOn a trip to Paris in 1888 Kroyer ran into Marie Martha Mathilde Triepcke, whom he had known in Copenhagen. They fell in love and, after a whirlwind romance, married on 23 July 1889 at her parents' home in Germany. Marie Krøyer, who was also a painter, became associated with the Skagen community, and after their marriage was often featured in Krøyer's paintings. The couple had one child, a daughter named Vibeke, born in January 1895.Condition report: Some dirt under the glass and spotting to the background. There is a line of damge/rub running from her eye downwards, approx. 4in in length.
