A extremely rare 1847 Daguerreotype of Giuseppe Mazzini (1805-1872) taken by Antoine Claudet (1797-1867), depicting Mazzini posed with his head in his hand whilst leaning on a book upon a table beside him, gazing at the viewer, a note pinned to velvet lining of case reads 'Daguerreotype of Mazzini taken by Claudet in 1847 ("Mazzini's letters to an English family" Vol 1. p.60)', photo 7 x 6cm, case 9.5 x 8.5cm.  Provenance: Giuseppe Mazzini was an Italian politician, journalist, and activist for the unification of Italy (Risorgimento) and spearhead of the Italian revolutionary movement. His efforts helped bring about the independent and unified Italy in place of the several separate states, many dominated by foreign powers, that existed until the 19th century.  The photographer of this portrait, Antoine Claudet, became one of England's first commercial photographers using the daguerreotype process for portraiture, improving the sensitising process by using chlorine (instead of bromine) in addition to iodine, thus gaining greater rapidity of action. In addition to this, he also invented the red darkroom safelight, and photographed significant figures such as Michael Faraday and Charles Babbage. His daguerreotype of Hemi Pomara, in the National Library of Australia, is the oldest known photograph of any Māori person. This item belongs to the Estate of the late William Lloyd George, 3rd Viscount Tenby (1927-2023), the grandson of David Lloyd George, 1st Earl of Dwyfor (1863-1945) the British Prime Minister from 1916 to 1922 during WWI, who was known to be influenced by Giuseppe Mazzini. R. Taylor, an early 19th-century 8-day oak long-case clock, the painted broken arch dial bearing the portrait of Queen Caroline, the hood with swan neck pediment, 47 cm wide x 25 cm deep x 220 cm overall height.Formerly of Donnington Castle House, near Newbury, Berkshire Formerly of Donnington Castle House, near Newbury, Berkshire The glass of the hood is cracked. There are no weights or pendulum, so not in working order.Updated:The movement looks very clean and looks as if it has been recently restored and re-gutted.The cheeks that support the movement are uneven. It would seem that a packing block is missing from the right-hand side. This causes the dial to sit awkwardly in the hood/mask. It is common for these to be replaced. The hood door has a cracked glass panel, the clock has some patches to the veneers. The trunk door does not have a key.The clock does not have either weights or a pendulum. In short this clock would need some work to make good but it looks as if most of the horological work has been done, but sadly it will require a pendulum and weights.

Wanly attended Italian painter Ottorino Becchi's new studio in Alexandria, Egypt and was introduced to avant-garde movements like Futurism and Cubism. These two styles formed the basis from which Wanly developed his personal artistic vision defined by angular lines, bright shades and colourful geometric shapes. Becchi left Egypt and Wanly decided to set up his own studio with his brother in Alexandria. The studio was set up during the 1940s with the filmmaker Mohammed Bayoumi, who also collaborated. Their studio is frequently credited with bringing attention to the art of the region.

SABHAN ADAM (SYRIAN B.1972) PORTRAIT D'HOMME signed with initial and dated 2006 upper left; signed and dated in English SABHAN ADAM / 6 6 2006 verso mixed media on canvas 175 x 139cm; 69 x 54 3/4in unframed Property of a private collector, London Provenance Acquired directly from the artist Collection of Hadba Nizar Kabbani Thence by descent to the present owner Syrian-born Sabhan Adam is a self-taught artist who creates works in relative isolation from the art world. A prolific painter, Adam has exhibited at institutions such as the Uffizi Gallery, the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris and the Venice Biennale. His work has been acquired by the British Museum, Jalanbo Collection, Barjeel Art Foundation, and is in many private collections. The present lot is a remarkable work that challenges notions of beauty and the heinous, one of a series of works that explore motifs of misshapen creatures often clothed in glamourous attire against plain backgrounds. While distorted and monstrous, the figures hold a complex set of emotions based on Adam’s own psychology. He states: 'The figures I paint have so many things in common with me... I draw myself with everything that exists inside: the sadness, the misery, the shocking things I have faced, the isolation, and the feeling of not belonging to this world.'
