Royal Flying Corps interest- Caroline Agnes Burras First World War portrait miniature on ivory of 2nd Lieutenant Frank Skelton R.F.C., monogrammed C.B., in a black papier-mâché frame. Included is the original photograph of 2nd Lieutenant Skelton, (which the miniature is a copy of) along with a calling card bearing his name. APHA Ref: 91CGXY17N.B. Second Lieutenant Frank Skelton, son of William and Fanny Skelton from Leeds was killed on 21st October 1917, aged 19 years, only a few weeks after arriving at the front. Prior to his death he had been studying Medicine at Downing College Cambridge, where he also composed verse for the Colleges magazine 'The Griffin'. During his time at Cambridge, he also trained with the University’s Officer Training Corps, and in January 1917 was given a commission in the Royal Flying Corps with 28th Squadron. After his death in October 1917, he was buried in Mendingham Military Cemetery in Belgium. The last words on his headstone are Downing College’s motto ‘Quaerere Verum’, meaning ‘Seek the Truth’. Following his death, his parents also paid for a commemorative window in the Memorial Hall of Willaston School, which Skelton also attended.

20TH CENTURY CHINESE SCHOOL "Portrait of a lady", head and shoulders with script upper left and script seal mark lower right, mixed media, 65 cm x 66 cm, together with a companion by the same hand depicting "Two figures", 67 cm x 67 cm CONDITION REPORTS Single figure - see images for seal marks and script marks. There appears to be some loss of paint to the right bottom above shoulder and some cracking and loss of paint to the left bottom, other side and half way up left hand side and top left. Born in Mobile, Alabama in 1862 Florence Chandler, aged 19 travelled to England and met Liverpool cotton merchant James Maybrick and the couple married in 1881. James Maybrick fell ill and died on 11 May 1889 and his wife was accused of poisoning him with arsenic.She was convicted and sentenced to death but the sentence was commuted to life imprisonment. She spent more than 14 years in prison, mostly hard labour before being released in 1904, whereupon she returned to the US after her citizenship was restored, and died in penury in 1941.There was some later supposition that James Maybrick, or his brother Michael were Jack the Ripper suspects. The case attracted huge public interest at the time on both sides of the Atlantic.
