Book signed, a hardback edition of La Tribu Arc-En-Ciel by Josephine Baker, in collaboration with her husband Jo Bouillon, published by Mulder & Zoon, Amsterdam, 1957, with colour illustrations by Piet Worm. The children's book has been signed by Baker in blue ink opposite the title page. Binding a little loose and the spine reinforced with clear tape. Some age wear, about G. Together with Ella Fitzgerald (1917-1996, American Jazz Singer) Programme signed, the printed 4to programme for a performance in Liege, Belgium. STEPHENSON GEORGE: (1781-1848) English Civil Engineer, built the world's first public railway line. A.L.S., Geo. Stephenson, one page, originally 4to and now neatly split into two oblong 8vo sheets, Liverpool, 26th April 1830, to the Directors of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. Stephenson states that he has been requested by the Directors of the intended Liverpool and Birmingham Railway 'to examine the country between these two Towns in order to report upon the best line' and asking for some time to make his survey. In the latter half of the letter, with several crossings out and insertions by Stephenson, he makes clear his proposals for the survey and confirms that the works on the Liverpool and Manchester Railway will not be neglected. The letter, in its two halves, has been neatly mounted beneath a large, impressive 17.5 x 27 engraving of Stephenson standing in a full length pose, a steam locomotive in the background. Framed and glazed in the large, original frame to an overall size of 31 x 41. Attached to the verso of the frame is an A.N.S. by Lowthorne Bell stating 'This portrait of George Stephenson....was presented to me by his nephew Geo. Robt. Stephenson upon centenary of his birth 9th June 1881'. G

BLESSINGTON MARGUERITE COUNTESS OF: (1789-1849) Irish Novelist. A.L.S., Margte. Blessington, three pages, 8vo, Gore House, 6th November 1840, to a gentleman, on attractive stationery with gold printed floral borders and illustrations of birds in each corner. Blessington thanks her correspondent for his presents 'of the most delicious game I ever tasted' and continues to solicit his support for Mr. Guthrie, 'who aspires to the appointment of assistant surgeon at the Westminster Hospital. He is son to the eminent surgeon of that name, and is a young man of remarkable abilities and good conduct.' Final page laid down to a portion of a page removed from an album, alongside a small portrait of Blessington. Slight, neat splitting to folds and one large tear to the final page, just affecting the text but not signature. About G

Signed in bold, dark fountain pen ink by Lehar across the light background with a lengthy inscription in French, 'A Mr. Coens, directeur du Theatre Royal de Gent, en souvenir de la creation du "Pays du Sourire" en langue francaise, avec mes tres sinceres felicitations et sentiments reconnaissants.' Signed with a large signature and dated Vienna, 1932 in his hand. A handsome signed portrait with interesting association. Neatly mounted and with very light age wear to the edges, about VG The Land of Smiles is a romantic operetta in three acts by Lehar. It was first performed in Berlin on 10th October 1929 with Richard Tauber performing in the role of Prince Sou- Chong.

LEONCAVALLO RUGGERO: (1857-1919) Italian Composer. A good signed postcard photograph of the composer in a profile head and shoulders pose. Leoncavallo has neatly penned a musical quotation to a clear area of the right edge, the quotation comprising three bars, with lyrics, which Leoncavallo identifies as being from Act III of his opera Zaza (1900). Signed by Leoncavallo in bold black fountain pen ink to a clear area beneath the image and dated Berlin, 25th May 1904 in his hand. A postal cancellation slightly affects the first part of the composer's signature, which remains totally legible. An attractive signed portrait, enhanced by a musical quotation. VG

Published in eight volumes over thirty-five years, The Antiquities of the Herculaneum is regarded as one of the most important archaological works of the 18th century and its impact on the culture of Europe cannot be underestimated. The volumes should be considered a collective work of by all the members of the ‘Accademia Ercolanese’. Several engravers were employed, among the more emminent were Filippo Morghen, Pierre Gaultier, Francesco Cepparoli and Nicola Billy. Sold as a collection of plates, not subject to return. (6)

Autograph letter signed, ‘Horatio Nelson’, [Corsica], 8th May 1795, to Thomas Pollard, Nelson’s prize agent in Leghorn, Tuscany, written with his right hand, ‘You have always furnish’d Mr Roxburgh, Surgeon of the Agamemnon, with Money for his necessary bills. It is necessary that vouchers should be made out to pass my accounts. [I] have therefore to request that you will sign the receipt for the payment & that you desire Mr. Cornuit & some other person to atest that they are at market price. Be so good as to do it quickly, for I know not how soon we will be off. I sincerely hope you are better & hope soon to see you in perfect health’, 2 pp. with integral address leaf, a little spotted and soiled and sl. wear to centre fold of address leaf, 4to, the letter laid open to display the second and third leaves with signature on the left below which is a docket, presumably in Pollard’s hand, asking Mr. Cornuit to comply with the request, surmounted above a window -mounted modern colour portrait of Nelson, the whole framed and double glazed with pages 1 and 4 of the letter visible on the reverse (1)

A Chelsea FC photographic archive from the collection of the late Scott Cheshire, Chelsea author and historian, in four folio size albums, each containing a fine and comprehensive selection of original b&w press portrait photographs of Chelsea players from the 1950s and 1960s, plus occasional team-groups and other imagery; sold together with a fifth album, being a scrap book covering the period 1939 to 1949, with some original press photographs, press cuttings, magazine plates, cigarette cards, ticket stubs, etc. (5)

A rare W.G. Grace brass belt buckle circa 1873, with a central portrait of Grace in raised relief, inscribed W.G. GRACE'S AUSTRALIAN TWELVE, and additionally inscribed with the names of the twelve players of the. 1873-74 tour. Grace's tour of Australia in 1873-74 was. on the invitation of the Melbourne CC, but deemed by the MCC to be an 'unofficial' tour.

After Archibald J. Stuart Wortley (1949-1905), W.G. GRACE AT THE WICKET. photogravure signed in pencil by the artist and the subject, cricket ball remarque to lower margin, published by Messrs. Manson, Swann and Morgan, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, 1st May 1891, printed in Berlin, 53.5 by 21cm., 21 1/4 by 16in., glazed within original frame, original framer's paper label to reverse. A pupil of Sir John Everett Millais, Archibald J. Stuart Wortley (1849-1905) was a portrait and sporting painter of considerable renown. This limited edition photogravure, signed by both the artist and W.G. Grace, is based on an oil painting which was commissioned by the M.C.C. by means of subscriptions in 1888-90, and now hangs in the Long Room. The artist was paid £300. The scene is Lord's Ground with the old tennis court in the background, now the site of the Mound Stand.
