* BARBARA BALMER RSA RSW RGI (SCOTTISH 1929 - 2017 DOORWAY, SPRING oil on board, initialled, titled versoframedimage size 76cm x 65cm, overall size 88cm x 77cm Note: Barbara Balmer had a singular vision. Her pictures have a curious, if not surreal, edge. In her instantly recognisable style, she took the everyday and simplified it into shapes and patterns that she filled with subtle gradations of colour. Born in Birmingham, she moved to Scotland by way of a scholarship from Coventry School of Art that took her to Edinburgh College of Art (1949-1953). Her contemporaries are a roll call of familiar names of Scottish art: Elizabeth Blackadder, John Houston and Frances Walker to name a few. Balmer, however, eschewed the expressive brushwork and vibrant palette of the time and developed her own unique visual vocabulary. Throughout her long career, spanning more than five decades, she was twice selected to exhibit at the John Moores Exhibition in Liverpool, and had solo shows at the Richard Demarco Gallery and the Open Eye Gallery in Edinburgh, the Scottish Arts Council Touring Exhibitions and at the Fine Art Society in Edinburgh. Barbara taught at Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen between 1970 and 1980 and held a retrospective exhibition at Aberdeen Art Gallery which travelled to Dundee, Lincoln and Coventry. Her work is included in many public and private collections including, The Royal Collection, The Scottish National Portrait Gallery (Portrait of Richard Demarco), The City Art Centre, Edinburgh, Leicester City Museum, Aberdeen and Stirling Universities, Aberdeen, Glasgow, Birmingham, Perth, Dundee and Lincoln Art Galleries. Seven of her paintings were used as dust jackets by Virago for the Modern Classics series and she was an elected member of the Royal Scottish Academy, the Royal Glasgow Institute and the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour. In Barbara's obituary in The Herald, Richard Demarco wrote: "I hesitate to define her as an English, Scottish or indeed British artist. Her particular art must be viewed as belonging to the great and enduring tradition associated with the latest manifestations of European painting in this age of modern art".
* JOAN GILLESPIE (SCOTTISH b. 1954), QUAYSIDE NEAR TOULON oil on board, signed and dated '90, titled labels versoframed and under glass image size 34cm x 30cm, overall size 47cm x 42cm Handwritten artist's label verso Label verso: The Open Eye Gallery, EdinburghNote: Born in Dundee in 1954, Joan Gillespie studied painting at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee and completed her Diploma course at Edinburgh College of Art. Over the years she has found affinity with the works of some of the Impressionists, the Nabis, the Newlyn School, the Glasgow Boys and the Scottish Colourists. Composition, paint quality and colour distribution in painting are very important to her. Her works are in the collection of Lord McFarlane of Bearsden, Trinity International Holdings and in private collections in Spain, Australia and USA. Joan Gillespie has exhibited in galleries throughout Scotland since 1987 including the Macaulay Gallery in East Lothian, The Open Eye and Flying Colours Galleries in Edinburgh, the Atholl Gallery in Dunkeld and the Contemporary Fine Art Gallery in Eton. * PETER HOWSON OBE (SCOTTISH b. 1958), CAPOCCHIO oil on canvas, signed, titled and dated 2010 label versoframed image size 61cm x 46cm, overall size 68cm x 53cm Label verso: Flowers Gallery, LondonNote: Peter Howson is an artist of disarming visual honesty. His work, which at different stages of his career has celebrated allergy and allegorised celebrity, depicting the landscapes of modern war and internal struggle with a Goyaesque brilliance, is testament to an obsessive occupation with the dark recesses of existence, a drive that he has channelled in recent years into a robust faith and spiritualism. The painting on offer here is Howson’s modern interpretation of the Character and probably has elements of a self portrait with “Bowie Eyes” and is part of a group of portraits executed in 2010 and inspired by Dante’s Divine Comedy. Bowie was well known for his extra ordinary talents as an actor, songwriter musician and chameleon leaving a wide body of work across many art forms. Capocchio was well known in his day for his extraordinary talent for mimicking others and nature (as an artist). According to early commentators, Dante knew Capocchio personally and he was from either Florence or Siena. Capocchio was Condemned in 1293 as a Heretic and an alchemist.

* ALEXANDER GOUDIE RP RGI (SCOTTISH 1933 - 2004), MONTAGNE DE LA SAMBUY, FROM VERYIER DU LAC oil on board, signed titled label versoframed and under glassimage size 37cm x 62.5cm, overall size 50cm x 75cmExhibition label verso: Where Skies are Blue Exhibition, '94/95, Artbank, Glasgow.Note: Alexander Goudie was born in 1933 at Paisley and, as a child, showed prodigious talent for drawing. He studied at Glasgow School of Art when William Armour was head of drawing and painting and David Donaldson was the ubiquitous influence. Goudie, as a student at Glasgow, demonstrated his extraordinary ability. He received the Somerville Shanks Prize for Composition and, later, his draughtsmanship and sense of colour was recognized with the award of the Newbery Medal. As a young artist he grew up admiring three great masters, Sir John Lavery, George Henry and James Guthrie; all artists who had bridged the gap between Glasgow and Paris. It was these artists’ glorious virtuoso control of oil paint that appealed to Goudie, as well as their genre and realist subject-matter. Alexander Goudie was elected a member of the Glasgow Art Club in 1956 and a member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters in 1970. He painted a portrait of the Queen for the Caledonian Club, London (1992/93), and exhibited widely, showing at Harari and Johns, in London, the Fine Art Society, Glasgow, and the Musee de la Faience, in Quimper. Sir Timothy Clifford, former Director of the National Galleries of Scotland, wrote: ''At his best, Goudie could draw better than any of his rivals in Scotland. There was magic and vision in his art and, I expect, history will be kind to him.'' Collections: 79 of Goudie's paintings are held in UK public collections including at Glasgow Museums & Galleries, The Hunterian, Rozelle House Galleries, Paisley Museum & Art Galleries and The Fleming Collection (London).
