19th century School, Portrait of James David Gilkison (1884-1914), as a young boy dressed in sailor's uniform and seated beside a fishing creel basket, 36in x 28in (91.5cm x 71cm), framed. Note: James David Gilkison was born on 1st August 1884 at Sutton Court, Carshalton Road, Surrey. He was the younger son of Dugald Stewart Gilkison and Margaret Dunlop Gilkison (née Ralston) from Campbeltown in Argyllshire. James was educated at Shrewsbury House School, Rugby and Trinity College, Oxford, then called to the Bar in January 1906. He was gazetted 2nd Lieutenant with the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders (Princess Louise's) from the Militia, on 11th December 1907, and promoted Lieutenant on 25th March 1910. Gilkison served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders, reported wounded and missing after the Battle of Le Cateau on 26th August 1914, and was assumed to have been killed in action on that date. Captain Maclean of the Argylls wrote home to Mr Gilkison senior "Jim met his death in most gallant manner. The Regiment lost one of its best liked officers, and I a very true and valued friend in Jim".

Pip McGarry ARR Framed oil on canvas, signed, dated 2014 'Portrait of a Tiger' 86cm x 60cm Pip McGarry is recognised as one of the world's leading wildlife artists, Pip has an international reputation for his oils of big cats and African game.  Pip first came to prominence in 2004 with his popular television series 'A Brush with the Wild' which was copresented with Annika Rice, the programme was filmed on location in Kenya and focused on teaching celebrities how to paint wildlife. His paintings occasionally arise at auction and in 2008 his painting 'Flight of the Zebra' sold for a record £29,300 at Christies in London.  The oil paintings in our sale were purchased direct from the artist by the vendor.

TRANSOCEAN NEWS SERVICE, Portrait of Professor Carl von Eicken, Berlin, 1936 or earlier, framed gelatin silver portrait of Prof. von Eicken (1873-1960), surgeon to Adolf Hitler, Transocean blind stamp, Eicken signature and inscription in ink recto, some metallic tarnishing of black background, notes pasted frame verso detailing receipt of the framed photo in 1936, image 8.5cm x 13cm, frame 17cm x 24cm. Note: Hitler had polyps from his vocal cords removed by Prof. von Eickenin 1935 and again in 1944. The Transocean News Agency became an organ of Nazi propaganda after 1933.
