Hesse´, in bold black fountain pen ink, to the verso. EX
REY FERNANDO: (1917-1994) Spanish Actor. Best known for his roles in Buñuel´s films and for his role as the drug lord in the films French Connection (1971 & 1975). A good signed and inscribed 8 x 10 photograph by Rey, the image depicting him in a close-up portrait pose, in a scene of Son of a Gunfighter (1965). Signed and inscribed in bold black ink to a clear area to the lower left corner of the image. The present photograph was obtained in person by well-known French autograph collector Pierre Gouillard. MARTI JOSE & ESTRADA PALMA TOMAS: José Marti (1853-1895) Cuban Poet, Writer and Revolutionary Philosopher. Martí is considered a national hero as well as a leading figure in Latin American literature. He became a symbol for Cuba's fight for independence in the 19th century, and is referred to as the "Apostle of Cuban Independence”; & Tomas Estrada Palma (1835-1908) First President of Cuba 1902-1906, and previously during the Ten Year´s War. Remembered for allowing the Platt Amendment which ensured American dominance over Cuba. An exceptional and very attractive multiple D.S., `Jose Marti´, and `T. Estrada Palma´, two pages, large folio, New York, 15th January 1895, to Manuel Ocejo y Pastor, in Spanish. The partially printed document bears the printed heading of the New York delegation of the Cuban Revolutionary party, being a title given to contributors in favour of the cause, “Patriotic Assistance - Fundraising - To finance the war in favour of the Independence and for the Freedom of Cuba”. The attractive document, printed in green and black colours, bears four cleanly affixed portrait photographs of Jose Marti, Tomas Estrada Palma, Gonzalo de Quesada and Benjamin Guerra, all of them laureate with their printed names beneath. The document is signed by Marti and Estrada Palma in their capacity as delegates and is also signed by Gonzalo de Quesada as Secretary of the delegation and Benjamin Guerra in his capacity as Treasurer. The lengthy written text, entitled “Cuba in arms”, is a manifesto in favour of Cuban Independence and freedom, against the Spanish occupancy and slavery, concluding with the motto “Homeland and Freedom”. The document bears beneath the signatures a large red paper seal affixed of the Delegation of the Cuban Revolutionary Party. Small overall minor age wear, with small remnants of a former red wax seal to the upper edge. G to VGThe present document is signed by Jose Marti on 13th-15th January 1895, only two weeks before drawing up the Uprising order. A month later, on 24th February, the uprising took place, and three months later Marti was killed at the battle of Dos Rios only a month after having returned to Cuba. Gonzalo de Quesada y Arostegui (1868-1915) was the key architect of Cuba´s Independence Movement with Jose Marti. Appointed Special Commissioner of Cuba to the United States in 1900. He later entered the diplomatic service, becoming minister to the United States. De Quesada authored “A History of Free Cuba" (1898) and "Cuba" (1905). He also edited Marti's literary works 1900-11.
LEE ROBERT E.: (1807-1870) American General, Commanded the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia in the American Civil War from 1862 until his surrender in 1865. A good vintage signed sepia carte-de-visite photograph by Lee, the albumen print being of the famous 'floppy tie' portrait of the General in uniform with three stars visible on his collar and his tie loosened. Signed ('R E Lee') in dark ink with his name alone to the image. Some light mottling, otherwise VGProvenance: The present photograph was originally contained within an album of autographs of eminent Americans of the Civil War period which were obtained by the Welsh journalist John Griffith (1821-1877) who had travelled to America as a correspondent before the Union victory was sealed and returned in 1867.This famous portrait of Lee, one of his and his wife's personal favourites, was taken in 1864 and is variously attributed to John W. Davies or (less frequently) Julian Vannerson, both respected Richmond photographers.
[REYNOLDS JOSHUA]: (1723-1792) English Portrait Painter. A scarce original engraved ticket for the funeral of Reynolds in St. Paul's Cathedral, London, 3rd March 1792, one page, oblong 4to, with an engraving to the centre by Francesco Bartolozzi after Edward Francis Burney, the image depicting a woman in mourning, leaning on a stone casket, with an infant standing at her feet. A panel to the centre of the side of the casket bears the Latin words Succedet Fama, Vivusque Per Ora, Feretur and, at the base appears further text, in full, 'The Executors & Family of Sir Joshua Reynolds return thanks for the tribute of respect paid to departed Genius & Virtue, by your attendance at the funeral of that illustrious painter & most amiable man, in St. Paul's Cathedral, on Saturday, March 3rd 1792'. With the name of William Weddel (sic) in ink to the lower margin and the address Upper Brook Street to the lower left corner. Some light creasing and age wear to the borders and a few tears and areas of paper loss to the upper left corner, G Edward Francis Burney (1760-1848) English Artist who studied at the Royal Academy Schools from 1776, receiving encouragement from Sir Joshua Reynolds. Francesco Bartolozzi (1727-1815) Italian Engraver whose most productive period was spent in London where he lived for almost forty years. Bartolozzi was elected as a founding member of the Royal Academy despite their bylaws specifically excluding engravers. The present ticket would appear to have been granted for William Weddell (1736-1792) British Politician who created a notable collection of antiquities. Weddell had purchased a townhouse at number 6 Upper Brook Street in 1772 which was to be re-designed by Robert Adam.
[GARIBALDI GIUSEPPE]: (1807-1882) Italian General and Politician, one of Italy's 'fathers of the fatherland'. A mid to late 19th century reverse portrait on glass painting of Garibaldi, the oval (14 x 17) portrait depicting the General in a head and shoulders pose, in uniform. Unsigned and by an unknown artist, with the red title Garibaldi to the left edge. Framed and glazed in the original ornate gilt wooden frame to an overall size of 20 x 23.5. With several later ink annotations and a newspaper clipping relating to Garibaldi pasted to the back of the frame, one signed by a Neville Blakey and stating ‘This superb painting in oil on canvas is by an unknown artist, is attached to the convex of glass & was obtained from the collection of C. M. Cooper, Rosehill Road, Burnley, May 8 1938 by my father J. H. Blakey’. G
WARHOL ANDY: (1928-1987) American Pop Artist. Attractive colour signed 4 x 6 card by Warhol. The stiff folding colour card being the Warhol´s exhibition program held at the Kunsthaus in Zurich, from 26th May to 30th July 1978. Signed in bold black ink `Andy Warhol´ to the front page right border, the image showing one of Warhol´s works with his own portrait. VG

ATTLEE CLEMENT: (1883-1967) British Prime Minister 1945-51. T.L.S., C R Attlee, with holograph salutation and subscription, one page, 4to, n.p. (London), 8th December 1953, to Sir Gerald Kelly, on the printed stationery of the House of Commons. Attlee thanks his correspondent for their letter and remarks 'I have read your memorandum with a great deal of interest and will discuss it with some of my colleagues'. STEICHEN EDWARD: (1879-1973) Luxembourgish-American Photographer and Painter. A Pioneer, since his works were first published in Alfred Stieglitz´s Camera Work from 1903 to 1917, later becoming a fashion photographer, working for Vogue or Vanity Fair. Regarded in the 1930´s as the best known and highest paid photographer in the world. Steichen also directed the documentary The Fighting Lady in 1945, which won the Academy Award for Best Documentary. A good signed 8 x 10 photograph by Steichen, the image depicting him in a close-up portrait pose. Signed in bold black ink to the bottom right corner `Edward Steichen´, also dated in his hand. DYLAN BOB: (1941- ) American Singer & Songwriter. Rare signed compact disc sleeve, `Bob Dylan´, corresponding to his album Modern Times, released by Columbia Records in 2006, with all songs written by Bob Dylan. The four colour pages folding sleeve bears to the front page a “Taxi, New York at Night” photograph, to the inside pages a photograph showing Dylan and his band performing for the Modern Times recording, and to the back cover the printed list of songs with a half profile portrait pose of Dylan. Signed in bold blue ink to a largely clear area of the front cover. Autograph obtained in 2006 on the occasion of the record presentation.
RAVEL MAURICE: (1875-1937) French Composer. A fine, rare vintage signed and inscribed 6.75 x 9 photograph by Ravel, the image (4 x 5.5) depicting him in a head and shoulders pose. Photograph by J. Heby (?) and bearing their studio stamp to the lower right corner of the photographer's mount. Signed in bold black fountain pen ink by Ravel to the upper photographer's mount, 'A mon cher editeur et ami E. Demets, bien cordialement, Maurice Ravel'. An excellent signed portrait with good association. Neatly mounted and with some very light, minor silvering to the edges of the image and some light age toning to the edges of the photographer's mount. The page removed from an autograph album has been neatly affixed to a black card, beneath two 3.5 x 5 paper photographs, unsigned, each one depicting Guitry and Printemps respectively in portrait poses, to an overall of 7.5 x 10.5. Small trace of former staple to the upper edge. Together with two very attractive colour images of Petain, the first being a 9.5 x 13.5 colour cardboard photograph, with a support to the verso for display. Corner crease to the lower right border. The second created by Philippe Noyer, from the Alain Fournier´s team, being an original attractive colour 12 x 15 poster, with the printed text "Revolution Nationale" beneath Petain´s portrait and with the French flag to the background. With multiple pinholes to the corners. Also including three 6 x 9 paper cover contemporary editions of "Le Chef Compagnon - Metier de Chef" issued in January and February 1943, and the third issued early 1944. BONNIER JOAKIM: (1930-1972) Swedish Formula One racing Driver. First Swedish driver ever entering a Formula One Grand Prix. Rare signed 5 x 7 photograph by Bonnier, the attractive image depicting the Swedish driver, wearing his helmet, in a close-up portrait pose. Signed in bold blue ink `Avec mes meilleurs voeux, Joakim Bonnier´ to the upper clear area of the image. Signed photographs of Bonnier are rare and desirable in any form after his tragic death in a crash during the 24 Hours of Le Mans, in 1972, when his Lola T280-Cosworth collided with a Ferrari Daytona and Bonnier was catapulted over the barriers and into the trees. Manet refers to one of his paintings and states in part `My dear Guillemet, I count on you to make my painting be sold well. Proust will take care of his portrait..´ Manet further refers to comparative grievance, and congratulates himself before concluding. A cleanly written letter. VG
DUKAS PAUL: (1865-1935) French Composer. Best known for his symphonic poem The Sorcerer´s Apprentice featured in Disney´s film Fantasia (1940). A.L.S., Paul Dukas, one page, Amiens, to a small 8vo post-letter, Wednesday, n.d., to Monsieur Pierre Custot, Royan, in French. Dukas states `My dear Sir, Here I am back to Royan for eight days. It will be a great pleasure to see you again if you don´t mind coming and make a short visit to me on Saturday about 6h?´, further saying `I brought for you from Paris the portrait that you asked me for. COUBERTIN PIERRE DE: (1863-1937) Charles Pierre de Frédy, Baron de Coubertin. French Educator, Founder of the International Olympic Committee. Widely known as the father of the modern Olympic Games. Rare A.L.S. `P.C´, three pages, 4to, Lausanne, 18th December 1928, to Hector Barbe, in French. Coubertin states in part `I fully ignored that the Tribune de Geneve had published any “portrait” of myself… As far as I know, Mr. L.H. Bury, Director of the “Gymnaste Suisse”, 10 Valentin, Lausanne, has clichés showing a skiff with me inside, also the marble seat that the city of Athens dedicated to me at the Pericles stadium, and the inauguration ceremony of the monument of Olympia.´ Coubertin further says `I read with strong interest everything I receive from your journal…I wonder if in today´s date world, so inorganic, we can live in a different way, I mean to live in the sense of creating.´ A letter of interesting content. A good signed 8 x 10 photograph `Con Simpatia, Giulietta Masina´, the image depicting the Italian actress in a close-up attractive portrait pose. Signed in bold blue ink to the upper part of the image. VG
ROPS FELICIEN: (1833-1898) Belgian Printmaker Artist. A very good autograph letter with an extremely attractive drawing by Rops. Scarce A.L.S., `Felicien Rops´, one page, 4to, drawing card, Paris, July 1893, to a close friend, in French. The drawing is showing a young woman, standing in a full length top less pose, with very light pink colour to the lips and breast, wearing a hat. An unusual letter, full of humour and wordplays, stating in part `My dear friend, I couldn´t receive you this morning despite your card underlined in red. I had a model, a little Demoiselle who was sent to me by Georges, postmarked and recommended the wench! She stands a bit hunchbacked, but that fat is a grace. The neck a bit skinny. As details of her life, seduced by a poet from the south of France…´, Rops further refers to his drawing, saying `.. To reimburse you the four shelves that I owe you, I send to you on this sheet which I usually use for my drawings, a sketch of the above mentioned puberty, in her very first hesitation at the time of the ablation of her shirt. Her eye is still quite candid…her mouth, not crumpled by the too wise kisses imposed by the members of the urban society of modesty..´ further again adding `Very pretty, soppy look… I hate such noses.. Only good for the French Theatre. False thin, delicate chest… Nevertheless, she is as she is, and we will have to try to get something good out of it.´ Rops adds before concluding `Come on Thursday, I´ll be there without model, and we will talk about art, industry, the hygiene of Antoine and Tolstoy, and abou Madagascar.´ An excellent and unusual content letter. The letter bears also, side facing and to the upper right corner, a small portrait sketch of a man, with beard and hat. Signed and inscribed 4.5 x 6.5 photograph, dated Palma de Mallorca, 3rd of January 1980, the image showing Cela inscribing one of his works book; & GEORGES SIMENON (1903-1989) Belgian Writer. Best known as the creator of the fictional detective Jules Maigret. A good signed and inscribed 4 x 6 photograph by Simenon, dated 1978 in his hand, the image depicting the writer in close up portrait profile pose. Both photographs are signed and inscribed in bold inks to a clear areas of the images. VG, 2
MADAME ROLAND: (1754-1793) Born Marie-Jeanne Phlipon, also known as Manon Roland de la Platiere. French Revolutionary salonniere and Writer. Guillotined. Very rare and one of the last letters written by Manon before being executed, A.L.S., with paraph, four pages, 8vo, from the prison of Sainte-Pélagie, [mid-October 1793], to Jany, in French. A letter of very interesting content where Madame Roland confides her notebooks of memories and her secret love for Buzot. Madame Roland states `Your sweet letter, dear Jany, has done to me as much good as your kind conversation. Tender pity is the real balm of a sick heart. I can feel the delicacy that makes you loath to ever publish my secret.. Personally, I hold absolutely and only to the truth. I have never had the slightest temptation to be esteemed more than I am worth. I want that people know me as I am.´ further referring to Jean Jacques Rousseau, saying "J.J. never seemed to be guilty of his confession." Madame Roland further explains to her correspondent her situation with her jealous husband, and refers to her lover Buzot stating in p art `I am not intending to apologize, but I am convinced that the jealousy of the unfortunate R. alone, (referring to Roland, her husband) made my secret pierced by confidences… Do you believe that he had written about it, with all the outburst and falsehood of an irritated mind that hates his rival and wants to deliver him to public loathing? Can you imagine how much these writings inflamed my indignation and the feeling for how much he is unfairly mistreated? Yes, you saw him, and you portrayed him well. You will find his painting portrait and also his writings in a box that you will be given. It is my dearest belonging… Keep them safe in order to pass them on one day..´ Further again, Madame Roland refers to her fate saying `As far as I´m concerned, it´s all over. Do you know the disease that the English call heart-breaken?(sic) I have it, without cure, and I do not want to delay the effects, fever is growing, I hope it won´t be long. My freedom will never be restored to me.´ Before concluding, Manon expresses her concerns for Buzot´s fate and expects he will be able to reach America, and says goodbye to `Jany, my only friend who brings me comfort, goodbye!´ A historical letter of very interesting content. In very fine condition. VG Madame Roland´s correspondent, Jany, was the surname of French Geographer Edme Mentelle (1730-1816) a supporter of the French revolution.Letter provenance from former collection of the Marquis de l´Aigle.Madame Roland was known for her intelligence and political analyses. A good lobbyist and negotiator. Her salon was one of the most important meeting places for politicians. When her husband Jean-Marie Roland de la Platiere (1734-1793) unexpectedly became Minister of the Interior in 1792 under King Louis XVI, her political influence grew. She was involved in decisions about political appointments, and was in charge of a bureau set up to influence public opinion in France. Admired by Girondins and moderates but reviled by the Jacobins and hated by the sans-culottes of Paris. In June 1793, she was the first Girondin to be arrested during the Reign of Terror and was guillotined a few months later. Madame Roland wrote her memoirs while she was imprisoned in the months before her execution.

The manuscript document is a receipt issued to Mr. Molteno for the sum of three pounds 'for two proofs of Mr. Pitt'. With blind embossed revenue seal. Some very slight, extremely minor traces of former mounting to the verso, otherwise VGThe present receipt was most likely made out to Anthony Molteno, the printseller and bookseller of London.Hoppner painted several versions of British Prime Minister William Pitt the Younger's (1759-1806) portrait, and the original is considered to have been commissioned by Lord Mulgrave in 1804. Another copy is housed in the National Portrait Gallery, London, and a further one was sold at auction in London in 2008 for £36,000.

The bound front cover is entitled "Unit of Security and Development of the Borders (Program and Test) - Chief : Hugo Rafael Chavez Frias - Location Elorza - State of Apure - 1st of August 1986". The first page being a military order issued by the first division of Cavalry of the Defence Ministry, signed by General Brigade Luis Espinal Vasquez, appointing Chavez as chief of the project. Chavez annotates at the base of the document `The beginning of that unforgettable effort which remained palpitating in the legendary savannah of Alcornocal… Ah, world, when it was a world!! Rosenbach zeigt in Ihrer Fotografie Elvis Presley analog zum Vorbild. Er wird hier jedoch nur einfach dargestellt, denn verdoppeltet wird sein weibliches Pendant. Ulrike Rosenbach montiert sich selbst rechts und links an die Flanken des Sängers mit gleichem Outfit, gleicher Haltung und ebenfalls mit Pistole. Blick und Pistole zeigen dabei auf den Betrachter. Während Warhol in seinem Werk somit dem voyeuristischen Blick des Betrachters standhält, gelingt dies Ulrike Rosenbach durch die Aneignung des Motivs in zweifacher Form: Nicht nur dem Betrachter per se bietet sie Paroli, sondern auch dem männlichen Blick auf den weiblichen Körper, welcher den Mann zum handelnden Subjekt und die Frau zum passiven Objekt macht, das betrachtet und begehrt wird. Selbstbewusst als agierendes Subjekt wirft sie diesen Blick zurück. Darüber hinaus thematisiert sie nicht nur die Rolle der Frau, sondern auch die der Künstlerinnen. Rosenbach reiht sich so gekonnt in eine männliche Kunstgeschichte ein und ebnet den Weg, diese auch für Künstlerinnen zu öffnen. Mit traumhaften und symbolischen Motiven, die von seiner jüdisch-religiösen Kindheit und der russischen Volkskunst geprägt sind, schildert er seine verklärten Erinnerungen, seine Sehnsucht wie auch seinen Seelenzustand. Dabei folgt er in den irrationalen und bizarren Darstellungen keineswegs der klassischen Weltsicht. Vielmehr richtet er sich nach der Logik des (russischen) Märchens. Selbstbewusst zeigt er sich mit seinen Malerinsignien Palette und Pinsel und weist zugleich mit dem Ziegenkopf auf das nostalgische Zurückdenken an seine Jugend. Das Motiv des Doppelkopfes greift Chagall oft auf, denn mit ihm beschreibt er seine Eigenart gleichzeitig nach hinten, in die Vergangenheit, zu schauen und zugleich seinen Blick nach vorne, in die Gegenwart, zu richten. Dabei spielen Tiere wie Kühe, Hähne und besonders Ziegen eine wichtige Rolle, die ihm Symbole für seine Jugend und sein Leben in der Kleinstadt Witebek im heutigen Weißrussland sind. Zudem dienen sie ihm als Selbstreferenz, weshalb er sich in den Selbstbildnissen häufig als Tier wiedergibt. Im hohen Alter von 90 Jahren malt Chagall den "Peintre au double profil". Er kann nun auf eine lange erfolgreiche internationale Karriere blicken, die 1973 in der Eröffnung des Musée national de la message biblique Marc Chagall in Nizza und 1977 mit der Verleihung des Großkreuzes der Ehrenlegion Bestätigung findet. So schaut der Maler in sich gereift nun mit Zuversicht in die Zukunft. Dabei greift er in seinem späten Schaffen auf seine künstlerischen Anfänge zurück und widmet sich bestimmt dem Thema "der Künstler bei der Arbeit". Er wird als erstes von neun Kindern in Köln geboren und auf den Namen Franz Lambert getauft. Schon früh hegte Jansen den Wunsch Maler zu werden. Jedoch gab er zunächst dem Wunsch seines Vaters nach und absolvierte von 1903 - 1905 eine Ausbildung im Maurerhandwerk, um im Anschluss ein Architekturstudium zu beginnen. Schon während des Studiums in Karlsruhe und Wien beginnt Jansen an seiner Zukunft als Architekt zu zweifeln. Er sieht sich als Künstler und als Autodidakt beginnt er ab 1909 ausschließlich künstlerisch zu arbeiten. 1911 tritt Jansen der "Kölner Sezession" bei. Gerade die übersättigte Atmosphäre der Vorkriegszeit erzeugte bei den jungen Künstlern eine Suche nach neuen Ausdrucksformen, die ihren Niederschlag in den expressionistischen Bestrebungen fand. 1912 war Jansen mit einem Bild in der legendären Kölner Sonderbund-Ausstellung vertreten, in der neben den rheinischen Expressionisten auch die internationale künstlerische Avantgarde der Moderne darunter Matisse, Gauguin und Van Gogh vertreten waren. 1913 nimmt er auf Einladung von August Macke an der Ausstellung "Rheinische Expressionisten" im Kunstsalon Friedrich Cohen in Bonn teil. Als Autodidakt nimmt der Künstler diverse stilistische Anregungen auf, um so zu seinem eigenen Stil zu finden. Sein Frühwerk zeigt sich beeinflusst vom Wiener Jugendstil. Später beeindruckten ihn die Kunst van Goghs und die der Fauvisten sehr. Dabei ist Jansens Malerei weniger Expressionismus als expressiver Realismus. Auch den Weg in die Abstraktion geht er nicht mit, sondern bleibt stets der sichtbaren Wirklichkeit verpflichtet. Nach den Schrecken des Ersten Weltkrieges nimmt Jansens Kunst eine gesellschaftskritische Haltung ein, ohne die Darstellung einer harmonischen Natur aufzugeben. Neben seinem malerischen Oeuvre hat Jansen ein noch umfangreicheres grafisches Werk geschaffen. In seinen Holz- und Linolschnitten sowie Radierungen vermag er seine künstlerischen Ideen besonders klar zu formulieren. Erst in den 1920er Jahren wendet sich Franz M. Jansen wieder verstärkt der Malerei zu. Damit stellt sich für ihn auch ein kommerzieller Erfolg ein. Bekannt wird er für seine großformatigen Landschaftsgemälde, insbesondere seine rheinischen Motive. Das hier vorstellte Werk offenbart sehr deutlich eine Hinwendung zur "Neuen Sachlichkeit". Es zeigt ein Porträt von Jansens Ehefrau Mathilde "Fifi" Kreutzer (1891-1977) - selbst eine talentierte Malerin, die jedoch stets ihren eigenen Erfolg hinter dem ihres Mannes unterordnete. Bereits 1908 lernen Kreutzer und Jansen sich kennen und lieben. 1917 heiraten sie entgegen dem Willen ihrer Eltern. Als Zeichen seiner Liebe und tiefen Verbundenheit ändert Franz Lambert Jansen seinen Namen in Franz M. Jansen, wobei M. für den Vornamen seiner Frau Mathilde steht. Das Werk stellt eine ganz in schwarz gekleidete Fifi Kreutzer auf einem Stuhl sitzend dar. Die Arme sind auf die Lehne gestützt und die Hände in den Schoß gelegt. In der rechten Hand hält sie eine weiße Lilie. Ihr Gesicht ist von einprägsamer Schönheit und mit scharfen Konturen gemalt. Der Blick auf nichts Bestimmtes gerichtet. Sie wirkt ein wenig müde, gedankenverloren und völlig in-sich-gekehrt. Sie strahlt gleichzeitig die Ruhe und Gelassenheit einer Frau aus, die in Ihrem Leben bereits Höhen und Tiefen durchlebt hat. Unter ihr zeigt sich die Weite der Rheinlandschaft mit ihrem mäandernden Fluss. Franz M. Jansen ist mit diesem Gemälde ein faszinierend-schönes Porträt seiner Frau gelungen, das als Liebeserklärung an Sie zu verstehen ist. Die Lilie symbolisiert im christlichen Kanon Reinheit, Liebe und Unschuld. In der weltlichen Symbolik steht sie für Hochachtung und Zuneigung.
