VERA CUMMINGS (NEW ZEALAND, 1891-1949); oil on canvas, 'A Hot Day, Wiremu Patara Te Tuhi Ngati Mahuta', signed, 20 x 15cm, framed and glazed.The Ngati Mahuta chief Patara Te Tuhi (1824-1910) was a key leader in the Kingitanga, the Maori king movement which aimed to unify Maori under a single sovereign. He was a newspaper publisher and secretary to his cousin King Tawhiao and travelled with him to England in 1884 to seek recognition from Queen Victoria of the 1840 Treaty of Waitangi signed on her behalf. In 1901 Patara Te Tuhi met the artist Charles Goldie and this portrait by Vera Cummings is a smaller version of the painting produced by Goldie. CONDITION REPORT: This lot came from a private vendor whose grandparents travelled to Australasia between the wars. There is some scuffing to the edges where it has rubbed with the frame.
Two early to mid-19th century photograph albums with pressed decorated covers, containing various portrait photographs within floral chromolithograph decorated mounts, a resin frame with ornamental cover, 7.5 x 6.5cm, and a pair of Art Nouveau white metal fronted frames, diameter of aperture 6.5cm (5).
JJ WILLSON (19th century); a set of three watercolours, portrait studies of young women, each signed in pencil with initials, oval 17 x 14cm, mounted as one, a further example 'Trout Fishing In Loch Leven' engraved in the 'Sporting & Dramatic Views' and three pastels to include 'Subject Of The Month', 'Evening', 'Lake Windermere', also an unsigned watercolour, all mounted but unframed (6).
18TH CENTURY ENGLISH SCHOOL; oil on canvas, a three-quarter length portrait of the Irish peer Joshua Allen, 5th Viscount Allen (1728-1816), unsigned, 126 x 100cm, framed. CONDITION REPORT: Repair and overpaint to upper right shoulder, similar to right little finger and background lower left, crazed throughout with further areas of suspected retouching, wear to canvas edges with some small nicks to subject matter, frame and stretcher heavily worn with small nicks and pockmarks throughout so possible worm damage.
H HUGHES (19th century); oil on canvas, 'Mrs H Pritchard Bryngola', a half portrait of a woman wearing a bonnet, titled and inscribed to the verso 'H Hughes Pinxit 1840', 77 x 65cm, unframed. CONDITION REPORT: Several tears to the canvas with losses of paint, extensive grazing to the area around the face and bust, large of fine flaking particularly to the lower left, areas of dirt and damp.
Five Royal Doulton figures; HN2499 'The Helmsman', HN2731 'Thanks Doc!', HN2877 'The Wizard', HN2362 'The Wayfarer', and HN2017 'Silks and Ribbons' (all second quality), and three pieces of Wedgwood jasperware comprising a green vase, a dark blue vase and a dark blue heart shaped trinket dish with cover with a portrait of the Queen (8). CONDITION REPORT: All five Doulton figures are of second quality but otherwise appear in good condition, the Wedgwood pieces are in good condition with no sign of damage or repair.
