GERMAN SCHOOL, 17TH CENTURY St. Arnuldhus, later Bishop of Metensis Oil on canvas, 74.5 x 58.5cmSt. Arnuldhus, also known as Arnulf of Metz (Circa 582-640 CE) is celebrated as a 7th century Frankish bishop and believed to be the earliest known ancestor of Charlemagne (748-814 CE). He was born into a privileged Frankish family, and his connections therein enabled him to travel to the court of Theodebert II, King of the Austrasia. Arnulf was considered highly adept at administration and in this capacity, he was promoted to position of King’s minister and later a Bishop of Metz. With the accession of King Clothaire II and later his son King Dagobert I (Circa 603–639 CE) to the throne of Austrasia, Arnulf served as the chief tutor and minister of the young King. A deeply pious man, it was Arnulf’s intention to retire to a monastery. In the year 626 CE he appointed a suitable successor to the Episcopal See of Metz and then finally he withdrew to the Vosges to live a quiet, hermitic existence until his death circa 640 CE.After Arnulf died, his parishioners intended to recover his remains and return them to Metz to be interred there. The journey was long and the conditions difficult, leaving the group weak with hunger and thirst. One of the company cried out for the spirit of Arnulf to replenish their supplies and allegedly their drink rations, however small never ran out for the duration of their journey. As a result, St. Arnuldhus is known as the Patron Saint of Brewers.Brewing was a common occupation of monasteries and holy men at that time as drinking water was often contaminated and caused outbreaks of waterborne disease such as cholera and typhoid. Brewing required boiling the liquid which inadvertently purified it and helped lower the likelihood of illness. The presence of alcohol helped keep bacteria at bay. The patronage is demonstrated in the background of this painting which features heated vats into which brewers are pouring liquid from pails, and another figure drinks deeply from a flagon, while wooden barrel casks fill the foreground. It should be noted that St. Arnuldhus is often confused with St. Arnold of Soissons (1040-1087), a separate saint with a similar name who is also associated with brewing. This conflation can be seen here in this portrait as to the right of our subject we see a woven bee skep and a mashing rake, traditionally woven by monks for their apiaries. St. Arnold of Soissons has been credited with the discovery that the bee skep could be implemented to further filter and clarify the beer. The bee skep and the mashing rake are typically associated with the much later Arnold of Soisson yet here we can see how the oratory tradition may have blended the two figures.Stephanie Brennan, February 2025
