Gildas. The Epistle of Gildas, the Most Ancient British Author... Faithfully Translated out of the Originall Latine [by Thomas Abington], first edition in English, engraved frontispiece portrait by W. Marshall, title and text within double- and single-rule borders, woodcut initials and headpieces, title a little stained and with ink inscription and neat repair to head, e1 with marginal tear just running in to text, worming, mostly minor and to margin but more pronounced at start affecting a few letters of text, contemporary ink inscriptions to endpapers, later panelled calf, neatly and sympathetically rebacked with gilt "Ex Libris" stamp to foot of upper cover, [STC 11895], small 8vo, by T. Cotes, for William Cooke and are to be sold at his shop neere Furnivalls-Inne gate in Holborne, 1638.⁂ Provenance: Henry Seaman; Robert Brown; M. Cowper (ink inscriptions); Brent Maxfield (gilt stamp).
Unrecorded.- Gildas. The History of the Destruction of the Brittaines, [translated by Thomas Abington], title in double-rule border with woodcut ornament, woodcut initials and headpieces, title rather stained and soiled, scattered spotting and occasional staining, front free endpaper detached, 19th century diced calf, gilt, spine rubbed, [not in Wing], small 8vo, by T. Cotes, for William Cooke and are to be sold at his shop neere Furnivalls-Inne gate in Holborne, 1638.⁂ A seemingly unrecorded second edition of the previous lot. ESTC lists a 1652 edition of the same work under the title A Description of the State of Great Britain but nothing under this title. Both the first edition and 1652 editions call for a frontispiece portrait not present here.

Dunstans Church-yard in Fleetstreet, 1640, bound with Fifty Sermons Preached... The Second Volume, [Grolier/Donne 64; Keynes, Donne 30; Wing D1862], Ja. Flesher for M. F. J. Marriot, and R. Royston, 1649, together 2 works in 1 vol., first editions, letterpress titles within double-rule borders and with woodcut devices, woodcut initials, head- and tail-pieces, occasional light marginal damp-staining, small rust or similar holes to first work 3R5, 3Y1 & 4A1 and second work I1, N3, O1 & O4, with loss to 1 or 2 letters of text, contemporary calf, neatly and sympathetically rebacked, covers rubbed and scuffed, folio. ⁂ Two good collections of sermons by Donne one volume. The prefatory essay in the first is the first printing of Izaak Walton's classic Life of Donne. While the second is listed as the second volume on the title, it is regarded as a separate work in its own right.
Cavendish (George) The Negotiations of Thomas Woolsey, The great Cardinall of England, Containing his life and Death, first edition, engraved portrait frontispiece, woodcut initials and headpieces, occasional scattered spotting, bookplate to pastedown, speckled calf, gilt, by B. M. Pickering, upper joint cracked but holding firm, extremities rubbed, g.e., small 4to, for William Sheeres, 1641.⁂ First edition of Cavendish's much-reprinted biography of Wolsey. "The refinement, the simplicity, the genuine goodness of the writer is present at every page. The fullness of portraiture, the clearness of of personal details, the graceful description, the reserve shown in drawing from memories of the time long past and outlived, give the book as distinction of its own, and place it high among English biographies." - ODNB. Shirley (James) Poems &c., 3 parts in 1 vol., first collected edition, the Graham Pollard copy, engraved frontispiece portrait by Marshall, with blank f. second D8 but lacking final blank, second D3 margin frayed, title with typographic ornament, woodcut initials and headpieces, rear endpaper detached, bookplates, contemporary sheep, joints repaired, [Pforzheimer 933; Wing S3481], 8vo, for Humphrey Moseley, and are to be sold at his shop at the signe of the Princes Armes in St. Pauls Church-yard, 1646.⁂ The first of Shirley's poetry collections published during the theatre closures that lasted from start of the Civil War until the Restoration.Provenance: Thomas Bramstone of Skreens; Graham Pollard (bookplates).

With His Apologie for his voyage to Guiana, 4 parts in 1 vol., first edition, engraved portrait frontispiece, title within typographic border, woodcut decorations, with additional 4 advertisement ff. but lacking blank G8, ink library stamps to fore-margin of title and several other ff., ink ownership inscription to endpaper, 19th century half roan, [Pforzheimer 822; Wing R170], small 8vo, by T. W. for Humphrey Moseley and are to be sold at the Princes Armes in St. Pauls Church-yard, 1650.⁂ The first appearance of Raleigh's account of his second voyage to Guiana, also includes one of the earliest appearances of the word "tobacco" on pp. 24 (spelt tobaccho) and 34. Continental School (19th century) - Portrait of a young lady, half length, wearing a cream, red and grey dress, gilt necklace and earrings, her hair decorated with a red ribbon, signed with the initials CHB, pencil and watercolour heightened with white possibly on tinted paper, 10.5" x 9.25"
John Thomas Young Gilroy (1898-1985) - Portrait of 'Commander & Alderman Sir Robin Gillett Bart: GBE. RD. DSc. FNI. RNR, Lord Mayor of the City of London 1976-1977, Master 1979-1980', signed Gilroy '77 (1977) and further titled and dated by hand verso, oil on canvas, 40" x 30" within gilt frame - ** Provenance: Robin Gillett was staff commander on the transatlantic liner The Empress of France, where he met the artist John Gilroy in 1958. Gilroy was famous for his advertising posters, not only for various cruise companies (P&O and Canadian Pacific), but more particularly for his iconic adverts for Guinness. In 1976, the now-knighted Sir Robin Gillett became Lord Mayor of London - hosting Queen Elizabeth ll for her Silver Jubilee in 1977 - and commissioned Gilroy to paint his portrait. Gilroy had also painted portraits of the royal family. This portrait hung for many years aboard the HQS Wellington, moored at the Thames Embankment

His notes also include removing earlier over painting, noticeably to the upper portion of the picture. Under UV, we can still see overpaint throughout the image. The vertical splits are perhaps the main area of concern. General surface wear throughout. Please refer to additional photographs.
AFTER DAVID TENIERS THE YOUNGER; oil on canvas, ‘The Shepherdess’, portrait of a woman holding a tambourine with feather in her bonnet and sheep and landscape beyond, unsigned, with red wax seal verso, 51 x 44cm, framed.Additional InformationThe painting was purchased in the 1950s from a well known and historic Dutch family.We believe this to be a copy of the original held in the Hermitage, St. Petersburg.There is an area of loss to the figure's hair, which shows a patch repair to the reverse. The painting is dirty and also has a small crack running through her dress, approximately 3cm, however under UV light there is very little overpaint and the painting remains in pretty original condition. Some of the moulding is missing to the frame, we do have several sections, but not all sections. There is surface craquelure throughout.
