An interesting 18th Century silver oval box the hinged lid cast with rabbits within a circular leafy frame, the border hatched and foliate cast, the lid interior painted with a half length portrait of a female standing before a draped window with tree and landscape beyond, she holding a fan in her left hand and articulated mask in her right which moves when a slide is pulled to the right of the lid, the plain base engraved IG, 8cm wide, Circa 1790
ARTHUR WILLIAM DEVIS (1762-1822) PORTRAIT OF CAPT. THE HON. HENRY DUNDAS SHORE, 3rd SON OF THE 1ST LORD TEIGNMOUTH (1800-1826) Quarter length, wearing dress uniform, with shoulder belt, boss and prickers, oil on canvas 74.5 x 62cm. Provenance: By descent in the family of the sitter. * The sitter served with the 11th Regiment of (Light) Dragoons as Cornet in 1818, then in the 4th (Royal Irish) Regiment of Dragoon Guards (being promoted to Lieutenant in November 1822) before becoming Captain in the Royal Marines in 1826. He was unmarried. Shore died in Lourmarin, France in April 1826 and his funeral was a grand affair: "The pall was borne by officers of the French army. As the procession passed through the streets, which were densely crowded - as holiday had been granted to the people of the neighbourhood - its progress was indicated by volleys from the carbines of the gendarmerie and the same martial tribute was bestowed at the grave." Provenance: By descent in the family of the sitter. The sitter was born in England in May 1799 and married Charlotte Mary Cornish (1800-1883), the daughter of his mother's younger brother, in January 1830. He died in May 1837 in Calcutta as an employee of The East India Company, two days before his 38th birthday. His wife bore him three children, Louisa Sara, Arthur Frederick and Clara Maria. ++ Small blemish on nose; needs a clean; generally good condition

English school, 18th century, a half length portrait of a gentleman wearing a red coat, oil on canvas, 72 x 56 cm See illustration Condition report Thanks for your enquiry regarding the above lot. In terms of provenance, the picture came from a local deceased estate, specifically a bungalow. We don't know any more about it than specified in the description. There are no obvious labels, marks etc on the back of the picture, except what appears to be HV LEE indistinctly inscribed on the back of the canvas near the middle. The picture has been relined, although it looks to have been done a long time ago. It is generally quite filthy and with age related cracks, creases, marks etc. but no major losses or damage.

Image has also been cleaned at some point and paint appears quite flat. Five or six quite heavy one to two inch long scratches around the edge of the painting with some loss and some smaller chips and losses and marks towards the centre of the image, notably on the gentleman's cheek, hair and clothing. Apparently no labels or marks on the back of the work. Canvas generally very tight, like a drum skin.

Provenance: By descent in the family of the sitter until 2016 * The Duke of Cleveland's 1st wife, Lady Catherine Powlett, bore him eight children but died in 1807 aged 41. The Duke then married Elizabeth Russell, daughter of Robert Russell of Newton in Yorkshire, in July 1813 but there was no issue from this union. An undoubted portrait of the Duchess from the circle of John Hoppner is at Raby Castle, Co. Durham. ++ Lined; some scattered retouching; needs a light clean

Provenance: By descent in the family of the sitter. * Brassey was a major figure in the development of railways worldwide. He was the civil engineering contractor responsible for over one third of the railways in Britain and, by the time of his death, had overseen the construction of 5% of all the railways in the world, including massive projects in France, Canada, Australia and India. In addition, he built tunnels, bridges, viaducts and stations and employed over 80,000 people on four continents at the height of his career. Brassey was closely involved with the construction of the London sewerage system. He died in 1870 and is buried in Catsfield, Sussex.
