CHARLES GIFFORD DYER (AMERICAN 1845 - 1911), VENICE 1867 oil on board, signed, titled and datedframed image size 17cm x 31cm, overall size 35cm x 49cm Note: Charles Gifford Dyer was an American painter, known mostly for his architectural scenes of Venice and Greece. He and his wife, Mary Anthony Dyer, were part of an expatriate community of American artists which included their friend, John Singer Sargent who painted a portrait of her during one of their visits to Venice; now in the collection of the Art Institure of Chicago. Their daughter, Stella, was a piano prodigy but at the age of seven she moved to the violin and performed throughout Europe as a young woman. He was an art professor in Munich at the time of his death. His cremated remains were returned to America and interred in the Dyer family plot at the Oakwood cemetry in Chicago, Illinois. A series of thirty paintings of the ruins of Greece, commissioned by J. Pierpoint Morgan were left uncompleted.
JAMES WHITELAW HAMILTON RSA RSW (SCOTTISH 1860 - 1932), WESTMORLAND oil on canvas, signed, titled label versoframedimage size 56cm x 69cm, overall size 78cm x 92cm Labels verso: T. &. R. Annan & Sons, Ltd., Glasgow.Note: James Whitelaw Hamilton was born on 26 November 1860, the eldest child to wood turner James Hamilton and his wife Mary Stevenson of 1 Morris Place Glasgow. His parents moved the family to Helensburgh and lived at Thornton Lodge, 107 Sinclair Street, Helensburgh. Whitelaw Hamilton displayed an aptitude for painting at an early age, and after studying in Glasgow, he moved to Paris and studied at the studios of Pascal-Adolphe-Jean Dagnan-Bouveret and Aimé Morot, both considered leading lights of the 19th Century French Movement - specialising in landscapes and portraiture. Whitelaw Hamilton's landscapes have a rugged and raw quality but he did not limit his work to one medium being equally successful using oils, pastels and watercolours. Not surprisingly, given Helensburgh's reputation as a centre for artists, Whitelaw Hamilton became friends with the Glasgow Boys. In 1884, he joined Guthrie, Henry, Crawhall and Melville at Cockburnspath. EA Walton, who spent his winters at Thornton Lodge, and James Guthrie were to remain friends with Whitelaw Hamilton throughout their lives. They shared similar ideals and spent many years in Helensburgh recording the urban lifestyle of the wealthy residents in the town. Whitelaw Hamilton married Lillian Millar Shaw of 12 Lynedoch Place, Glasgow at St Mary's Episcopal Church on 9 September 1891. He and Lillian took residence in the Grange, 23 Suffolk Street, Helensburgh, the home that he was to remain in for the rest of his life. Whitelaw Hamilton exhibited abroad as often as he did at home. He became a member of the Munich Secession and won a gold medal at the Munich International Exhibition in 1897. He became a member of the New English Art Club in 1887, a member of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1922 and a member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolours in 1895. He also held the position of Hon. Secretary, Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts. He suffered personal loss in 1918, when his son Lt. Arthur Leslie Hamilton was killed in action in Mesopotamia on 25 October, serving with the 1st Highland Light Infantry. A portrait of his son was completed by James Guthrie and is held within the collection of the Glasgow Art Gallery. James Whitelaw Hamilton died in Helensburgh on 16 September 1932 aged 71. His work is represented in Glasgow Art Gallery, Perth Art Gallery, City of Edinburgh Collection, Lillie Art Gallery, The Hunterian, Perth & Kinross Council, Kirkcaldy Museums & Galleries, Paisley Museum & Art Galleries, Dundee Art Gallery, Kelvingrove, The Royal Scottish Academy, Walker Art Gallery, Weimar Art Gallery in Germany and other public collections.
* AUGUSTUS EDWIN JOHN RA (WELSH 1878 - 1961), PORTRAIT OF A GENTLEMAN IN A BOW TIE oil on canvas, signedframedimage size 45cm x 35cm, overall size 66cm x 56cm Note: Augustus Edwin John OM RA was a Welsh painter, draughtsman, and etcher. For a time he was considered the most important artist at work in Britain: Virginia Woolf remarked that by 1908 the era of John Singer Sargent and Charles Wellington Furse "was over. The age of Augustus John was dawning."
* JOHN BULLOCH SOUTER (SCOTTISH 1890 - 1972), GRAN VIA watercolour on papermounted, framed and under glass. image size 24cm x 33cm, overall size 40cm x 49cmLabel verso: The Late John Bulloch Souter Archive, Rendezvous Gallery, Aberdeen.Note: John Bulloch Souter, was born in Aberdeen and studied at Gray`s School of Art. After serving in the Royal Medical Corps during World War I, JBS became a highly successful and celebrated portrait painter. Sitters included Gladys Cooper, Ivor Novello, Fay Compton, entertainers and celebrities of the era, academics, military officers and society figures. He exhibited at The Redfern Gallery, the Fine Art Society, Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Academy. During World War II he worked in the Censorship Department as a translator. He also restored paintings from The Royal Collection at Windsor Castle. In 1926 his painting "The Breakdown" caused an international media storm and it was eventually withdrawn from the Royal Academy. The original painting was destroyed by Souter but he repainted a copy from the original sketches in 1962 which he amusingly dated 1926 - 62 and which was sold in Edinburgh in 2018 for £60.000. Souter married Christian Grace Reid in February 1926 at St Paul's Parish Church, Hammersmith. The couple were Jazz enthusiasts and were also regular visitors to the Opera. London was, and is, one of the most vibrant cities in the world and the diversity of entertainment appealed to the young Aberdonian and his beautiful wife. After 26 years of married life in London, Jack (as he was known to his friends and family) and Christian moved back to Aberdeen (1952) when JBS inherited "Kinnoull" 19, Anderson Drive in the city, from his sister Anne. Souter was a remarkably talented artist who painted an extraordinarily diverse range of subject matter in a variety of styles and mediums. He painted one of the most controversial British pictures of the 20th century and in so doing, possibly inadvertently, highlighted prejudices virulent in the 1920s and still resonant and acutely "current" almost a century later.

The encounter would lead to one of the biggest scandals in British politics of the last century and to the untimely death of Ward in 1963 by his own hand.
