Attributed to Steven Van der Meulen (active 1543-1568) Portrait of Robert Dudley Earl of Leicester Three quarter length standing wearing the Order of the Garter Oil on panel 114 x 86cm; 45 x 34in Sir Roy Strong suggested the attribution to Steven Van der Meulen for this portrait of Robert Dudley when he saw the picture at the request of Basil Telford Sharp 20-30 years ago. Van der Meulen moved to London from Antwerp in 1560 and took English nationality in 1562. Provenance: Elsie Beatrice Sharp nee Henry 1879-1952) Basil Telford Sharp (1917-1988) By descent to the present owner a direct descendant of the Henry family

* Obernetter (Johann Baptist, 1840-87). Photogravure portrait of Sir John Herschel from the original by Julia Margaret Cameron taken on 7 April 1867, n.d., full-face without black cap, facsimile of Julia Margaret Cameron`s inscription from the original to lower mount, "From life Registered photograph copy right Julia Margaret Cameron... ", signed "J.B. Obernetter" in lower right corner of image, 30 x 23 cm, captioned mount, framed and glazed. A typed paper label is pasted on brown paper to reverse of frame giving provenance: "One of Mrs Julia Cameron`s Photographic masterpieces, given to Margaret Ann Chance by Sir John`s daughter, Mrs Hardcastle, with a letter saying how much she had been helped by the lenses produced by James T. Chance at Spon Lane. Mrs Cameron, one of the beautiful Miss Pottles, executed such photographs of most of the celebrities of her time. Bequeathed by MAC to W. Hugh S. Chance 1932. Johann Baptist Obernetter was a Bavarian photo-chemist who worked briefly for the photographer Joseph Albert. His main achievements included the invention of silver-free photographic papers and photoceramic processes. (1)

Moule (Thomas). England`s Topographer or The English Counties Delineated, 2 vols., pub. George Virtue, 1838-39, portrait frontis. of King William IV, dec. eng. title page, folding b & w map of England and Wales, one folding map of the Metropolitan Boroughs, one eng. view and fifty-seven decorative uncoloured maps , mostly of English counties, four maps frayed & torn with loss and laid on later card, water stained and spotted throughout, near contemp. half sheep, frayed at extrems., 4to. The highly decorative maps by Thomas Moule are more usually found in the later editions of the Rev. James Barclay`s Dictionary. The English Counties Delineated is much less common. Many leaves and maps is these two volumes have old stitch marks which possibly indicates that this example is bound from the original parts. (2)
