ENGLISH SCHOOL 1597 Portrait of Sir John Fortescue (c1531-1607) half length, wearing a cameo of Queen Elizabeth I on a ribbon around his neck, charged with arms and inscribed Ano Domini 1597 Aetatis Suae 64, panel, 107 x 81cm Sold in what is probably the portraits original mouled oak 'box' frame. The holes at the top indicate that it may have been originally been hung from a rubbon. (see Simon (Jacob) The Art of the Picture Frame, 1996, pp49-50, Fig 40).

The canvas relined probably c1900 in what could well be the original highly ornate Victorian giltwood and composition frame with small losses. The paint surface with slightly flattened appearance but a good quality near contemporary Lawrence copy
A creamware teapot and cover, of cylindrical form with auricular handle, painted possibly in the workshops of David Rhodes with a portrait medallion of a lady or a church in a rolling landscape flanked by trees and flowers, the cavetto shoulders and low domed cover painted with pairs of flowers and with flower knop, 13.5cm h, Staffordshire or Yorkshire, c1775 Teapot - the odd pin head sized nick rather than a chip and some localised flaking of the enamels, the cover - two cracks and several rim chips mainly noticeable on the underside of the rim, no restoration
