Los 99

A WW1 officer’s 1914 Star with ‘Mons’ clasp, Prisoner of War medal trio, a portrait of the officer while in captivity, and other associated items. To include: a 1914 Star with original sewn on Mons clasp, British War Medal, each named to Captain Edward Nathaniel Drury-Lowe (1888-1948), of the Notts & Derby Regiment (Sherwood Foresters). Also included is a framed head & shoulders oil portrait of Captain Drury-Lowe, painted in 1917 while a P.O.W. In the Schwarmstedt camp, in Lower Saxony. The portrait is named, dated and has the artists name of ‘G.G.Jackson’ signed at the edge. G.G Jackson was almost certainly a fellow officer prisoner, and only person carries that name who was a prisoner at the time the portrait was made; Captain G.G.Jackson of the Ox & Bucks Light Infantry. Other items included in the lot include a WW1 era compass by Newton & Co of London, 2 1935 silver jubilee medals, a 1937 Edward VIII coronation medal, a Royal Navy bullion blazer badge, a 1904 dated (written in French) to ‘Monsieur Drury Lowe’ from the Royal College of Art, and a 1951 dated Engineers Certificate of Competency, and a framed baptismal certificate for Edward Nathaniel Drury-Lowe, and dated November 22nd 1888 (confirmed 1905). Notes: Capt Drury-Lowe’s medal index card confirms that the 1914 trio and clasp was his full medal entitlement. It would appear that he was also entitled to the Silver War Badge. He first entered the conflict on September 20th 1914, and according to published records by Cox & Co, he was reported as missing on October 20th 1914. He was confirmed as interned on February 6th 1918, and was repatriated on November 18th 1918. The Cox & Co records erroneously refer to him as ‘Capt W.Drury-Lowe’ of the Notts & Derby Regiment, but this must be this officer as there not another Drury-Lowe listed. Information supplied by the vendor suggests that the oil portrait was painted on the back of biscuit tin, and it was certainly framed in Germany judging by the label on the back panel. His medal index card also refers to the ‘Exonerated Officers List’, which clearly references his time as a POW, and the subsequent questions he would have been required to answer to army command upon his repatriation. Attestation papers suggest he first enlisted for service wit the 3rd Battalion Sherwood Foresters in March 1908. Unusually, the mounting bar for the medals is marked for Spink & Son of London, but whether they just supplied the bar or mounted the medals is unknown. Condition: generally very good. The medals are swing mounted (with original ribbons) on a bar for wear, with a fine colour and patina to each. The portrait is generally good, with just a little chipping to the frame in places.

Los 100

An emotive WW2 Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve casualty medal group, photograph album, other loose portrait photographs, and associated paperwork, for 151228 Flying Officer Leslie Sumner of 460 Squadron (Royal Australian Air Force). To include: a 1939-45 Star, Air Crew Europe Star, Defence Medal, and 1939-45 War Medal (with transit box addressed to his wife). Plus, a WW2 era snap shot photograph album showing many images from FO Sumner’s training in Canada. There are also numerous loose photographs, which include his wedding photographs, group shots of fellow officers, views from inside the cockpit, an image of his temporary headstone etc (only a small selection of these are shown in the images). Letters and newspapers clippings are also included in the lot. Notes: the medal group and archive has been consigned a friend and work colleague of FO Sumner’s widow, Constance Mary Sumner, who bequeathed the items to the consignee many years ago. Mary Sumner, as she was known to friends, never remarried after death of her husband, and she died aged 83 in 2001. Leslie Sumner was born in 1914, and was a chartered accountant in Manchester before WW2. He volunteered to join the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, and was subsequently sent to Canada for his training (as pictured in the photograph album). Anecdotal evidence suggests that he could have served in a ground based office position (based on his civilian employment), but chose to volunteer for flight training. Leslie wanted to fight for his country and hoped that any children he had in the future would be proud of him. A harrowing letter, sent by the Air Ministry to his widow nearly 2 years after conclusion of WW2, details what they knew regarding the circumstances of the crash. While serving as a Navigator on a Lancaster MK1, Serial No.ME740, his aircraft came down near Marigny-le-Grand, on May 4th 1944. Seemingly, an eye witness account described how the aircraft came down from a great height, and hit the ground with a large explosion. Such was the disintegration of the plane, that only 2 bodies could be recovered for burial, and the plane itself could only be identified from the serial number on the fuselage. The letter hoped that it would be some ‘slight consolation to know that death must have been instantaneous’. It’s known that Leslie’s Lancaster took off on May 3rd from Binbrook, to bomb a military camp. The aircraft was shot down by a night fighter minutes after making its bombing run. Leslie is commemorated along side his fellow flight crew, in a collective grave in the Marigny-le-Grand churchyard, France. Condition: generally very good. Understandably, the medals appear to be unworn, with a good and patina from the minting process. 3 of the 4 medals are in their original paper wrappers. The photographs and paper ephemera show normal age related wear, which may include fading, some tearing or foxing.

Los 118

A German pre WW2 era signed photograph of Oberst-Gruppenfuhrer Josef ‘Sepp’ Dietrich (1892-1966). The studio portrait would appear to be from the early 1930’s. His collar tabs are for the rank of Major General / SS-Gruppenfuhrer, which he held from 1931, but his uniform is lacking the Golden Party Badge, which he was awarded in 1933, this would date the image to circa 1932. The original photograph is signed to the top left margin in fountain pen. Size 16.9cm x 12.4cm. Condition: some yellowing to the image, back and front. Very minor surface creasing to the left margin, and across the abdomen area of the figure.

Los 214

A fine quality, WW2 era portrait of an anonymous British RAF Officer, by Frank Ernest Beresford (1881-1967) Signed and dated 1942 to the bottom right. A Derbyshire born artist, Frank Beresford initially studied at the Derby School of Art, St John’s Wood Art School, and then the Royal Academy School. Frank served as a war artist for both the British and U.S. Air Forces, and the Dutch Government, but is likely best known for his painting, ‘The Princes Vigil’, which depicted the Lying in State of King George V. The original oil painting was purchased by Queen Mary as gift for her so, King Edward VIII, and it now resides in the Royal Collection. The portrait depicts a young RAF officer, but with no dedication revealing who the sitter was. There are several notes verso, some are illegible, but one notes that it was painted at the ‘Hall Studio London NW8’ which likely relate to the Hall flats at Grove End Road. Approximately 40.7cm x 30.2cm. Condition: generally good to the main facial areas. There is a scuff to the painted surface that reaches the tip of the sitter’s left shoulder, and slightly across the left pocket area, but some restorative work could improve this. The portrait is unframed.

Los 178

A scarce Mahdist war era souvenir memorial handkerchief. Printed with the portrait of Major-General Sir Herbert Stewart within a laurel wreath. Maj-Gen Stewart was wounded at the Battle of Abu Kru while fighting the Mahdists in the Sudan, and subsequently died on February 16th 1885. The handkerchief is hemmed to all 4 edges. Approximately 54cm x 52.5cm. Condition: generally very good. A few small spots of foxing to the fabric, but otherwise clean condition. No rips or holes to the fabric. Some small old pin holes to one edge where it has been previously tacked to a wall.

Los 189

A nice quality, late Victorian era studio portrait of a military bandsman. The photograph as been hand coloured / painted, to highlight his red tunic, ‘swallow nests’ to his shoulders, and the green facings to his tunic. He is pictured wearing the standard Home Service pattern helmet with spike. The detail of his helmet plate is unclear, but it could possibly be the Army Ordnance Department. Over his shoulder is strung a bugle, and he holds a pair of drumsticks, with a drum positioned to his left hand side. The photograph is housed in a gilt frame, with a fabric mount surrounding the photo. Approximately 35.9cm x 31.4cm frame size, image size 13.3cm x 9.5cm. Condition: generally good. The photo is clear, but there is some foxing. The painted details are quite vivid, but when looked at under magnification there is some crazing to the painted surface. The frame is solid, with just a tiny chip to the gilt surface on the left hand side.
