The German-Dutch botanist Karl Ludwig Blume (1796-1862) was director of the Rijksherbarium at Leiden, and spent most of his working life in the Dutch East Indies studying the indigenous flora, especially orchids. Rumphia was published in 4 volumes between 1835 and 1848, and contains, apart from the portraits, a total of 210 fine lithographs. (1)
