Banking - Gilbart, James William The works of... London: Bell & Daldy, 1865-66. 8vo, 6 volumes, presented to David Salomons, Alderman M.P. under the directions contained in the will of the testator, portrait frontispiece, contemporary morocco gilt, a.e.g.,a very good set (6) Note: A six volume set comprised of Gilbart's three major works on banking - A practical treatise on banking (1865), The logic of banking (1865) and The history and principles of banking (1866) [vols. I-IV] plus miscellaneous shorter essays on philosophy, including his work Logic for the million (1865) [vols. V-VI]. Provenance: Bookplates of Sir David Salomons, Broomhill, Tunbridge Wells in each volume. A financier by profession, Sir David Salomons was heavily engaged in public affairs. In 1839 he was Sheriff of the County of Kent, and in 1855 he became the first Jewish Lord Mayor of London, when he became the chief protagonist in the battle to secure for his people - Jews and others such as Roman Catholics and Quakers - the political rights enjoyed by other Englishmen. It was he who opened the campaign in public, fought out the issues in court, and laid himself open to considerable penalties, entering and speaking for his cause in Parliament.
