Attributed to Antonio Nicolo Gasparo Jacobsen (Danish/American, 1850-1921)A portrait of Oscar II also known as The Peace Shipoil on canvas 56.2 x 91.2cm (22 1/8 x 35 7/8in).Footnotes:ProvenancePrivate collection, Norway.Oscar II earned her title of The Peace Ship as she was the vessel chartered in 1915 by the the American industrialist Henry Ford for his World War One peace mission to Europe. Notable peace activists were invited on the trip which would depart from New Jersey with the aim of travelling around Europe, drumming up enough publicity to encourage belligerent nations to convene a peace conference. The mission was not successful. Infighting amongst the participants, press mockery, and illness on board all reduced the legitimacy of the trip. Ford, having recovered from influenza which he caught on the voyage, left the ship after its first stop at Oslo and made his way back to the US. Funded by Ford, the ship continued on its trip around Europe until 1917.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
