William Strang RA (1859-1921) Portrait of a young girl Signed charcoal, dated 1903, 39x25cm Strang was inspired by Holbein's drawings in the Royal collection at Windsor. he drew about 500 portrait heads in this manner between 1898 and 1909. Each was drawn in red and black chalks on tinted paper (see also lot 587)

A pair of ash trays, each with an applied enamelled plaque; one a Daschund; the other a Saluki, by Richard Comyns, London 1928, together with a circular ashtray surmounted by a cold-painted bronze Terrier and another ashtray with a match box holder enamelled with the portrait of a terrier, the pair, 4.1in (10.2cm). William Strang RA (Scottish 1859-1921) Portrait of Robert Louise Stevenson (1850-1894, Novelist, poet and essayist) Etching with monogram 15cm x 11cm Note: Auction records reveal the two most desirable etchings by Strang are those of Rudyard Kipling and Robert Louise Stevenson. At Bonhams, London in 2005 examples achieved prices of £2000 and £800 respectively. This etching of R. L. Stevenson was later published as the frontispiece of 'Vailima Letters' the book detailing the correspondence between Stevenson and Sir Sidney Colvin (1845-1927) Slade Professor of Fine Arts at Cambridge and keeper of Prints at the British Museum, he was also a friend of Stevenson, whose works and letters he edited.
