Slight brown mark to margin adjacent with mount bottom edge. Otherwise generally sound
FOLLOWER OF JOHN SINGER SARGENT (1856-1925) "Head and shoulders study of a young woman", charcoal, signature "John S Sargent" bottom right, and a further similar study by the same hand of "A young girl" also bearing signature, 50 cm x 35 cm and 62 cm x 48 cm (2) (Provenance : Latterly from the Estate of John Seymour Lucas, Blythe Priory - Seymour Lucas was a friend of Singer Sargent) (ONE ILLUSTRATED) CONDITION REPORTS The portrait of the lady has some general wear and slight yellowing and smudging. A couple of darker spots to the background. It is currently stuck down by its corners on to a black backing board (cardboard). Overall condition appears good. The picture appears to have been neatened / trimmed with scissors to the edges. The portrait of the young girl has overall some general wear and dirt and some smudges. There are pin holes to the corner of the paper. The paper has been ruled into squares or a grid with lines drawn in what appears to be red pastel. These red lines have been largely removed to the face area although some are still faintly visible in this area and red lines still visible to the rest of the picture (please see photos). There are tiny pinkish white highlights to the nose and eyes. Paper overall with some slight undulations but overall condition appears to be good. Paper is loose (not attached to any backing board) and has a few little creases and nicks around the edges.
EARLY 19TH CENTURY ENGLISH SCHOOL "Young gentleman in black stock and green and red tartan coat", a portrait study, miniature oil on ivory, unsigned, housed in a red leather covered oval case, 8.5 cm x 6.5 cm (ILLUSTRATED) CONDITION REPORTS The red case is quite heavily worn and scuffed and with some small tears to edges. The portrait has some light general wear and dirt. Some areas appear to be more varnished than others - this appears to be for effect, for example to the tartan jacket and scarf. NO CRACKS TO BASE MATERIAL
EARLY 19TH CENTURY ENGLISH SCHOOL "Gentleman in black stock, waistcoat and overcoat", a portrait study, miniature oil on ivory, unsigned, housed in a gold coloured frame with suspension loop and latticework hair verso, 5.3 cm x 4.4 cm (ILLUSTRATED) CONDITION REPORTS Gold mount has some rubbing and general wear conducive to age, glass front is quite dirty underneath bottom edge, as unable to open it is very difficult to judge whether it is just the glass that is dirty or if there is a little bit of damage towards the right-hand lower section of his overcoat by the collar, and it is again a little bit difficult to judge around that bottom edge whether there is any further damage due to the dirt under the glass, however the main picture - face, etc. - appears to be in generally good condition with very strong colours, the hair at the back appears to be in reasonable condition with a little deterioration along bottom edge and is slightly raised in the centre.
ENGLISH SCHOOL "Young lady with ringlets and leaves in her hair, in a shoulderless white lace dress", a portrait study, oval, miniature oil on ivory, unsigned, housed in a gold coloured frame and leather covered outer case, 7.3 cm x 5.8 cm (ILLUSTRATED) CONDITION REPORTS Overall with some general wear and minor scuffs. Some scratching to edges to the lower part of the picture. Some dirt. Overall, however, condition appears reasonably good. The outer picture-frame case has some scuffs.
ENGLISH SCHOOL "Gentleman with auburn hair in black stock and overcoat", a portrait study, oval, miniature oil on ivory, unsigned, together with another by the same hand of the same gentleman (2), 7 cm x 5.5 cm (ILLUSTRATED) CONDITION REPORTS Both frames/mounts are very dirty with signs of rubbing and general wear throughout. The back of the one which is turned is very rubbed and dull and flat towards the outer section where it has clearly been handled over the years. The other which has an open back - the hair is slightly coming apart and the green silk shows various areas of staining/water damage along the top and bottom edge (please see photo). The one with the hair appears to have had a replacement ring at the top - not original and does not really match, and picture is extremely dirty under the glass and is slightly mildewed and it is therefore difficult to judge if this has affected the lower section of the picture, however the top section colours appear good and strong, has clearly got damp at some point. The other picture - again the glass is slightly dirty on the lower section, it is a raised glass, the picture itself although probably a little dirty, appears reasonable, there is a little damage to the top right corner right on the edge of the picture. Both pictures would benefit greatly from sympathetic restoration.
ENGLISH SCHOOL "Young woman with red coral bead necklace and white dress", a portrait study, oval, miniature oil on ivory, housed in a pierced foliate decorated gilt metal frame, 7.6 cm x 6 cm (ILLUSTRATED) CONDITION REPORTS Decorative frame shows signs of rubbing, minor knocks and bumps throughout, is slightly bent towards the top and squashed, back shows signs of rubbing to the gilding throughout from general use, picture itself has some slight rubbing where it has sat under the frame over the years on the outer edge, but colours appear generally sound.
ENGLISH SCHOOL "Young woman with ringlets in a pink trimmed white lace dress", a portrait study, miniature oil on ivory, unsigned, 6.3 cm x 5 cm (ILLUSTRATED) CONDITION REPORTS Front of leather case is missing, remaining part of the leather case is in poor condition with rubbing throughout leatherwork on all corners, damage along the edges, etc. Mount has some dark dots of damage throughout (please see photo) and at least three or four water damage marks on corners of mount, picture itself however appears to have strong colours, is slightly dirty.
ENGLISH SCHOOL "Young gentleman in white stock and black overcoat", a portrait study, miniature oil, housed in an ebonised frame with gilt slip, 4 cm x 3 cm (ILLUSTRATED) CONDITION REPORTS Frame shows general signs of knocks and bumps on corners and edges, and some scratching, has clearly at some point had a little bit of quite crude touching-up carried out to cover previous knocks and bumps. Outer mount is slightly squashed towards the top corner and is rubbed. Picture itself appears slightly dirty and a little dull in colour/flat.
ENGLISH SCHOOL "Young woman with red bead necklace and white dress", a portrait study, miniature, housed in a Japanese style gilt metal embellished oval frame, 4.7 cm x 4.2 cm (ILLUSTRATED) CONDITION REPORTS The frame appears to be slightly uneven in shape and the portrait is slightly crooked / not quite upright within the frame when viewed from the front. Picture has some general wear and scuffs and a small chip to lower edge, colours appear strong. Not removed from the frame, so not known whether the picture may have been adapted / cut down to fit the frame. The frame has some wear and some small knocks and nicks.
ENGLISH SCHOOL "Gentleman in grey wig, white stock and brown overcoat", a portrait study, oval, miniature, housed in gilt foliate decorated oval frame with suspension loop, 3.7 cm x 3.1 cm (ILLUSTRATED) CONDITION REPORTS The glass to the front is very scuffed and scratched and the oval frame has knocks and dents and mis-shaping and the loop top has been soldered to the frame. The portrait appears to have some light general wear however, overall condition appears reasonably good. The frame has an aperture to one side and has possibly been adapted from a locket or similar.WATERCOLOUR ON IVORY
ENGLISH SCHOOL "Young children", a pair of oval miniature portrait studies on ivory, together with a pierced bone foliate decorated slip, each 3.2 cm x 2.7 cm (slip 4 cm x 9.5 cm) (ILLUSTRATED) CONDITION REPORTS The pierced slip is very dirty and stained and has numerous breaks and cracks and is warped. The portrait of the child wearing the plain white lace gown has some chips near edges to the lower half which appear to have been painted over, and overall with scuffs and scratches, including some scratches to paint and to hair, slight warping to the ivory. The portrait of the child with the black and white gown - overall with dirt and wear and some scratches and scuffs, ivory has warped quite a lot. Overall some light general wear and scuffs, small chip to lower edge.
ERNA HOPPE "Nude", a portrait study, oil on canvas, signed bottom right, 61 cm x 38 cm, housed in green stained Art Nouveau style foliate decorated oak frame, bearing various wax seals verso (ILLUSTRATED) CONDITION REPORTS Under ultraviolet light there are no apparently darker areas, just a few tiny specks showing darker. Under natural light surface has wear and cracquelure and the weave of the canvas is clearly visible. Overall surface is quite dull (not glossy) and has some dirt. Surface has some wear and rubbing throughout. Frame is coming loose at joins, has a green stained Art Nouveau type decoration which is quite faded, various scratches and chips to the frame. The canvas and stretcher are slightly shorter and narrower than the frame aperture and there is a gap between frame and canvas visible to the top.
CHRISTOPHER WILLIAMS "Mr Shaw", study of a grey haired gentleman with moustache seated, his arms folded, oil on canvas, signed bottom right (verso), bears old label verso inscribed "Unframed portrait of Mr Shaw, friend of Mrs Green, knew Edward VII", 76 cm x 63.2 cm (ILLUSTRATED) CONDITION REPORTS Overall with wear and scuffs including some large scuffs which have resulted in paint being scraped off - ie. above head and to bottom left of picture plus some other smaller scuffs including to clothing and background. Scuffs and wear to edges. The bottom of the picture has been folded over and under so that there is a surplus of canvas to the back of the picture and the area which bears the signature is now tacked underneath around the back of the picture and tacks have been placed all along the bottom of the stretcher over the canvas which originally formed part of the picture. The canvas has also been reduced in size to the front by more of the canvas being folded over to the reverse of the stretcher (please see photos). Tacks have been applied to all edges of the stretcher what was originally part of the painted canvas. There do also appear to be some areas of touched in paint / repairs.
