Captain Pitkeathly joined the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in 1946. By 1952 the accomplished piper was appointed Pipe Major of the 1st Battalion and after several tours of duty across the world he became Regimental Quartermaster Sergeant in 1964. In 1966 he was appointed Piper to the Queen, a position he held until 1973 when he was commissioned and posted to the Band Company at Dreghorn Barracks, Edinburgh.

"This important work was the earliest attempt at an elaborate description of Egypt, and its plates are the most significant previous to those of Denon" (Blackmer). Handsomely printed on large, heavy paper and elaborately engraved. Provenance: "J.L.H.", initials at foot of spines.
Gilbert Stuart (1755-1828) oil on canvas - portrait of Charles Francois Dumouriez (1739-1823) wearing white wig and cravat, emerald green coat with gold bullion embroidery in original giltwood frame with extensive hand written history of the artist and sitter to reverse, 53.5cm x 44.5cm (Charles Francois Durmouriez was born on 25th January 1739. He had a fascinating military and political career having joined the army in 1757 rising to the rank of General during the Revolution. He became a spy for Louis XV's secret service, was imprisoned in The Bastille, became Commandant of Cherbourg, French Foreign Minister in 1792, Minister of War and Successful Revolutionary General until he changed sides and fell from grace. He fled France and settled in England in 1804 where he assisted the British War Office against Napoleon. He died at Turville Park, near Henley on Thames on 4th March 1823).
