Pavel Tchelitchew, 1898-1957 PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST'S SISTER pencil and gouache on paper 62 by 46cm.; 24.5 by 18in. Executed in1925. Tchelitchew is probably best known for his famous portrait of Edith Sitwell that hangs in the National Portrait Gallery in London along with his extraordinary ballet designs commissioned by Diaghilev and Balanchine. This tender portrait of his devoted sister Choura was painted in 1925 shortly after his arrival in Paris. It was included in the 1995 exhibition The Sitwells at the National Portrait Gallery. A fireman's brass helmet, Merryweather pattern, the front plate embossed 'LCCLFB' (London Fire Brigade) with leather liner and chin strap, a 'Helmets Ltd' LFB painted canvas helmet, a presentation axe for Sub officer Warman G.E. 1974, a fire engine bell, a large quantity of cap badges and buttons, a photograph album, a facsimile portrait, a silver plated peaked cap butter dish, worn, together with a cased pair of Naval epaulettes, by Gillott & Hasell, New Burlington St., with belt by Gieves, and twelve brass models of battleships.
ATTRIBUTED TO THOMAS BARLOW RA, portrait of Lieutenant Edward Hackett R.N. seated in an interior wearing full Navy uniform, oil on canvas, 29" x 24 1/2". Upon retiring from the Royal Navy Lieutenant Hackett was appointed Governor of Reading Gaol in 1833 until he died in 1853 according to a label verso.
