A nursery plate by Moore & Co with moulded scroll border, printed in blue with an equestrian portrait, the underside with indistinct impressed mark, 142mm, restored and another with enamel coloured print entitled ‘Royal Favourites’ (2)(commemorative, pottery, royal, royalty, coronation).
Admiral Rodney: a creamware mug painted in colours with an inscribed portrait, circa 1780, 123mm, cracked(commemorative, pottery, naval, military, war).* Born in 1718 Rodney first went to sea at the age of 14.By the 1740s he had accumulated substantial prize money.From 1751 until 1782 he variously represented seats in Parliament culminating in Westminster.He played a significant part in the American Wars of Independence, was victorious against the Spanish in 1780 at the Battle of Cape Saint Vincent and again in 1782 at the Battle of the Saintes.See Drakard, plate 422.
A white parian portrait bust depicting William Darjan after E. Jones, the reverse inscribed, circa 1860, 216mm(Staffordshire, pottery, railway, railwayana, steam, commemorative, McAlpine).* William Darjan (1799 to 1867) was responsible for much of Ireland’s early railways. A marble bust presented to him by Queen Victoria is in the National Gallery of Ireland.Ex McAlpine collection.
Henry Hunt: a copper lustre jug banded in blue and printed in black with a named portrait in naval uniform centring maritime trophies, on the reverse a display of political aspirations and trophies, circa 1819, 148mm, spout restored(commemorative, pottery, political, parliament, election).* Hunt the orator at St Peters Field, Manchester was sometimes depicted by the Potter’s use of the earlier likeness of Commadore Bainbridge.The first bill banning the import of corn received Royal Assent in 1819.
Queen Charlotte: a particularly rare Worcester baluster shaped mug of small size printed en-grisaille with a most unusual half-length portrait looking down and slightly to sinister dressed in an elaborately jeweled costume, flanked by a scrolling ribbon inscribed ‘Charlotte Queen of Great Britain’, circa 1762, 85mm(commemorative, pottery, royal, royalty, coronation).* This depiction of Charlotte is a mirror image of the portrait by Thomas Frye, a mezzotint of which was published in 1762 (see National Portrait Gallery: NPG D9089).A pair of Worcester mugs of George III and Charlotte, depicted as on this mug, was sold a Sotheby’s in London on 4th May 2017 as lot 205.See also a mug, printed in rouge-de-fer with the original mezzotint version, in the Victoria & Albert Museum, accession number C.50-1938.It is quite possible that both versions were engraved by Thomas Billinge.
1826 General Election in Alnwick: a good pink lustre decorated cylindrical mug printed in brown and coloured blue with a named portrait of Bell, inscribed with the names of the candidates and votes cast, 124mm(commemorative, pottery, political, parliament, election).* At the general election held on 6th July 1826 the two Tory candidates were triumphant with Henry Thomas Liddell polling 1562 votes and Matthew Bell 1380.See British Commemoratives, plate 92 right.
1837/38 Victoria: a rare pottery plate manufactured for D. Brandon of Kingston, Jamaica, printed with a named portrait cartouche, within a colourful moulded border, the underside with printed mark, 236mm(commemorative, pottery, royal, royalty, coronation).* See Commemorative Pottery, plate 99.Given that there exist plates with portraits of Albert (see Commemorative Pottery, plate 100) it is equally possible that this plate was manufactured for the 1840 wedding.
Lloyd George: a pottery mug printed in brown with a cow and inscribed in Gaelic, circa 1913, 83mm and a Cartlidge portrait tile (2)(commemorative, pottery, political, parliament, election).* Much to the embarrassment of the authorities a riot developed in Turrif Market Square, Aberdeenshire when the Sherriff's officers tried to auction a cow having previously seized it from Robert Patterson for non-payment of the widely loathed National Insurance contributions, recently introduced by Lloyd George.In the event the cow was purchased with local support and returned to Patterson.
A good and rare frog mug lined in blue and well printed in black with named views of The Rocket and The Northumbrian centred by a view of the Exchange Buildings in Liverpool, the interior with a named view of Novelty and carriages centred by a portrait of Queen Adelaide, the interior modelled with a well coloured life like frog, circa 1831, 131mm(Staffordshire, pottery, railway, railwayana, steam, commemorative, McAlpine).* Ex McAlpine collection, 59.
Marquis of Granby: a good Worcester baluster shaped mug printed in black with a portrait flanked by the figures of Britannia and Fame, circa 1760, 85mm(commemorative, pottery, naval, military, war).* This engraving by Hancock was after one by Richard Houston published in 1760 after the painting by Reynolds. General John Manners, Marquis of Granby commanded the British contingent fighting under the Duke of Brunswick from 1759 until the conclusion of the Seven Years War including the battle of Minden.At the battle of Warburg, a corps of 20,000 French was routed following a charge where Granby lost his hat and wig, hence his bald-headed depiction.An incident that caused hilarity in the ranks and lead to the expression ‘Going at it bald-headed’!Ex D.V. Prince Albert: a well executed oil on canvas profile depicted head and shoulders looking to dexter, the top stretch on the reverse inscribed ‘Painted by J. T. Lucas’, oval overmount and probably original frame, 502 x 450mm overall, circa 1861(commemorative, pottery, royal, royalty, coronation).* John Lucas RA was a formidable portrait painter numbering amongst his sitters the Prince Consort and the Duke of Wellington.This profile is an almost exact copy of Mayall’s photograph of unknown date.See National Galleries of Scotland, accession number PGP 836.102.
