Attributed to Laurence Stephen Lowry, RA (British, 1887-1976) `A Discussion in the Street` oil on board, signed with initials `LSL` lower right, inscribed to old pasted label verso 9¾ x 6½in. (24.75 x 16.5cm.) * This painting was purchased by the vendor from a private collector in Belfast in the early 1970s, together with several other notable 20th century works including an Edward Hopper. It is executed in Lowry`s typical five colour palette and has several features which point towards his small scale figural work during the early 1960s, such as the small, portrait form artist`s board, the bold, horizontal lines across the lower part of the work (as seen in works such as `Gentleman Looking at Something` and `The Two Sisters`), the thick, impasto paint with visible vertical brushwork and the `halos` of brushwork to the surface of the paint around the figures` heads (e.g. `Portrait of a Girl with Short White Socks`). However, the three initial signature is very unusual and something which is usually only seen on Lowry`s drawings and watercolours. We have been unable to reference another oil painting by Lowry which is signed in this way and we have therefore catalogued the work as `Attributed to Laurence Stephen Lowry`. See Illustration
