Robert Farren (British, 1832-1910) Views of Cambridge (dated 1879 and 1889) engraving; together with After Edouard Frere (French, 1819-1886) Portrait of a Boy engraving various sizes (5) Robert Farren lived most of his life in Cambridge and latterly moved to Scarborough. ††Follower of Hans Eworth (Flemish, 1515-1574) Portrait said to be Thomas, 4th Duke of Norfolk, KG (1538-1572) with the Norfolk Coat-of-Arms and Motto oil on panel in an ornate gilded frame 47 x 38cm (18.33 x 14.82in) Thomas Howard, 4th Duke of Norfolk, was the son of the executed poet, Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey, and he was second cousin to Queen Elizabeth I, through Elizabeth I`s mother`s family. He married three times-to the heiress Mary FitzAlan, who died in childbirth; secondly, to Margaret Audley; and thirdly, to Elizabeth Leyburne. Howard was imprisoned by Queen Elizabeth in 1569 for scheming to wed Mary Queen of Scots. With King Philip II of Spain he was a participator in the Ridolfi Plot to put Mary on the English throne and restore Catholicism to England. The 4th Duke of Norfolk was executed for treason in 1572 and he is buried within the walls of the Tower of London. There is another version of this portrait at Audley End House

††Circle of John Vanderbank (British, 1694-1739) Portrait of Mrs James Hoste of South Wootton and Sandringham nee Hamond (1710-1759) in a Blue Dress and Gold Cloak, three quarter length oil on canvas 125 x 100cm (48.75 x 39in) Literature: Portraits in Norfolk Houses, Prince Frederick Duleep Singh, published 1927, No.36 Susan was the daughter of Antony Hamond and Susan Walpole, and was sister to Robert, 1st Earl of Orford. She married Major James Hoste (1705-44) of Sandringham and had two daughters. At one stage the Hoste family owned the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk, one of Nelson`s Captains at Trafalgar was a Hoste
††Circle of Jean Baptiste van Loo (French, 1684-1745) Portrait of Horatio, 1st Lord Walpole of Wolterton (1678-1757) half length oil on canvas 73 x 62cm (28.47 x 24.18in) Horatio was son of Robert Walpole of Houghton, by Mary, his wife, daughter and heir of Sir Geoffrey Burwell. He was the younger brother of Sir Robert Walpole, 1st Earl of Orford; their sister Susan married Anthony Hamond. Horatio Walpole was Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1707, Ambassador to Paris from 1724-1728, and was created Lord Walpole of Wolterton on 4 June 1756. He married Mary Magdalen, daughter and co-heir of Peter Lambard on 21 July 1720. He died on 5 January 1757, aged 79, and is buried at Wickmere, Norfolk. Horatio Walpole was the builder of Wolterton Hall in Norfolk, and ancestor of the present Lord Walpole. Van Loo`s original painting of Horatio, 1st Lord Walpole is in the Norwich Castle Museum and Art Gallery
††English School (19th Century) Portrait of Anthony Hamond Esq of Wootton in Wig and Black Jacket; and Portrait of Mrs Susan Hamond (nee Walpole) in a Lace-Trimmed Cap and Fichu oil on canvas 74 x 62cm (28.86 x 24.18in) a pair (2) Susan Hamond (nee Walpole) was sister to Sir Robert Walpole, Earl of Orford. The present pair of portraits are 19th Century copies of earlier Georgian portraits of Mr and Mrs Anthony Hamond of Wootton
JOSEPH DURHAM (1814-1877) A white marble portrait bust of Mary Peel, so inscribed verso OBT 7 November 1876 and signed J. Durham ARA 1877 on a plain socle, 28" high. Note: Mary Peel was daughter of the Rev. John Wilde of Hamage, Shropshire. In 1838 she married Jonathan Peel of Accrington House, Accrington, Lancs and Knowlmere Manor, near Clitheroe, Lancs. Jonathan was a barrister in the Middle Temple.
