A fine Great War submariner’s D.S.M. group of four awarded to Able Seaman W. Biggs, Royal Navy, who was decorated for ‘his coolness in a very exciting scrap’ in H.M. Submarine G.7 in the North Sea in April 1917, when his gunnery skills resulted in the possible destruction of an enemy submarine Sadly, however, he was still serving in G.7 when she was lost with all hands after being mined in the North Sea shortly before the Armistice in November 1918 Distinguished Service Medal, G.V.R. (238350. W. Biggs. A.B. H.M. Submarines. North Sea. 15 April. 1917.) with lid of its box of issue and related registered forwarding envelope; 1914-15 Star (238350, W. Biggs, A.B., R.N.); British War and Victory Medals (238350 W. Biggs. A.B. R.N.) extremely fine (4) £1,800-£2,200 --- Importation Duty This lot is subject to importation duty of 5% on the hammer price unless exported outside the UK --- --- D.S.M. London Gazette 22 June 1917: ‘The following awards have also been approved’ for ‘miscellaneous services.’ The original action report states: H.M. submarine G.7. Attack on enemy submarine on 15 April 1917 … Gunlayer. At about 100 yards the first round was fired and immediately there was a flash from just before his bridge (either our shell or his foremost gun). The second round I think undoubtedly hit him in the hull below the conning tower, she being beam onto us and the roll giving the gunlayer the shine of her hull as a target.’ William Biggs was born in Northampton on 20 April 1890, and entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in March 1907. Having then attended a course at the gunnery establishment Excellent, and qualified as a gunlayer, he was serving as an Able Seaman in cruiser H.M.S. Amethyst on the outbreak of war in August 1914. He quickly saw action at the battle of Heligoland Bight on the 26th, his service record noting that he was paid a bounty for the destruction of enemy ships on the same occasion. Removing to the cruiser Leviathan at the year’s end, Biggs remained similarly employed until mid-May 1916, when he volunteered for submarines. Shortly afterwards, he joined G.7, in which he was awarded the D.S.M. for her action with an enemy submarine in the North Sea on 15 April 1917. The identity of the enemy submarine remains a mystery, but the accuracy of Bigg’s gunfire seems beyond dispute, for it was witnessed by the passengers of a merchantman, off which the U-boat had surfaced; so, too, by four Germans who were taken prisoner. An accompanying copy of G.7’s captain’s report, as submitted by Lieutenant-Commander Geoffrey Warburton, R.N., who was awarded the D.S.O., makes for entertaining reading, for it involved a protracted approach and a resultant point-blank action, G.7 at one point attempting to ram her surfaced adversary. But the highlight of the action was surely the accurate gunnery of Briggs. Sadly, however, he was still serving in G.7 when she was lost with all hands after being mined in the North Sea shortly before the Armistice in November 1918, thereby becoming the last British submarine loss of the Great War. The son of Richard and Martha Biggs, of Northampton, and the husband of the late Dorothy Biggs, his name is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial. Sold with the recipient’s original parchment Certificate of Service, together with Memorial Scroll in the name of ‘A.B. William Biggs, D.S.M., H.M. Submarine G.7’ and a portrait photograph.

Ethel Bower (later Lady Ethel Alice Chivers Harris), British, 1867-1933, a plaster portrait relief of John Roddam Spencer Stanhope, dated 1906, inscribed JOHN · RODDAM · SPENCER STANHOPE · A·D · MCMVI, in walnut frame, plaster - 13.5cm diameter; frame - 21.7cm diameter; together with Portrait Medals of a Generation, Modelled by Ethel A.C. Harris, limited edition, no.85/250, London: Spink and Son, Ltd., 1928 (2)Footnotes: Note: Lady Ethel Alice Chivers Harris (neé Bower) (1867-1933) was the daughter of Edward Chivers Bower JP (1827-1896) of Broxholme, Scarborough, Yorkshire. She reportedly studied at the National Art Training School (Royal College of Art) in the 1890s and moved to London after the death of her father in 1896 and began exhibiting sculpture as Ethel Bower. She married barrister Henry Percy Harris in 1908, and continued to practice as an artist, first as Ethel A.C. Harris and then as Lady Harris, when her husband was knighted in 1917. She principally worked as a medallist, exhibiting over seventy medals and medallions at the Royal Academy between 1901-22. John Roddam Spencer Stanhope (1829-1908) was an English artist associated with Edward Burne-Jones and George Frederic Watts and often regarded as a second-wave pre-Raphaelite. He was the uncle and teacher of artist Evelyn de Morgan (1855-1919).
Two Meissen royal portrait busts of Princess Marie Zepherine de Bourbon and Prince Louis Charles de Bourbon, c.1753, the decoration of the Princess possibly Hausmaler and slightly later, probably modelled by J.J. Kändler, the princess turned slightly to the right, wearing a white headscarf with a ribbon-tied bouquet of flowers, a turquoise scarf around her shoulders and a posy tucked into her puce bodice, the bodice gilt with indianische Blumen, the prince turned slightly to the left, his pale-yellow bonnet with indianische Blumen and radiating gilt bands, a turquoise sash over his pale-purple jacket with indianische Blumen, each on quatrefoil-section bases edged with gilt scrolls, 16.2cm and 15.9cm high (2) Footnotes: Note: Princess Marie Zepherine de Bourbon (1750-1755) and Prince Louis Charles de Bourbon (1751-1761) were the children of Louis, Dauphin of France (1729-1765) and Maria Josepha of Saxony (1731-1767). Their maternal grandfather, Augustus III, Elector of Saxony and King of Poland, stipulated that both of these portrait busts should have blue eyes. Given that the present portrait of the princess has brownish-grey eyes, and there are a number of firing faults to the glaze, it is possible that her decoration was carried out by an independent Hausmaler. The models of Princess Marie Zepherine and Prince Louis Charles appear to be the work of J.J. Kändler, and they have been attributed to him by various scholars, although they are not recorded in Kändler’s Taxa. See Abraham den Blaauwen, Meissen Porcelain in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, 2000, cat. no. 330 for a bust of the prince, and Len and Yvonne Adams, Meissen Portrait Figures, London, 1987, p. 24 for a pair of busts. Similar examples sold in Christie's London, 28 March 1977, lot 135, and the example from the Nyffeler Collection sold at Christie's London, 9 June 1986, as well as a pair of similar busts sold by Christie’s on 11 December 2000, lot 464. Condition Report: Princess: There is some chipping to the flowers and yellow bow on her bonnet and to the posy tucked into her bodice. There are some dirt-filled small chips to the glaze and some dirt filled small firing faults to her face and shoulder –these are unsightly because of their location (but they could be retouched by a restorer – or, which would be very economical, they could be cleaned by a restorer). In addition, there is some minute wear to the gilding in places. Prince: There is some chipping to the flowers, puce bow and feathers on his bonnet – the majority of the principal feather is lacking. There is a chip to one of the white ribbon-ties of his shirt and there is a chip to the edge of the base at the back – both of these are relatively minor. In addition, there is some slight wear to the gilding in places.
A pair of 16th century carved oak Romayne panels. Circa 1540, each with a portrait roundel within carved swags and scrolls, height 35.5cm, width 17cm (2). From Ian & Penny Alexander.Mollie & Graham met in Wimbledon in 1978. He, a Cornishman, born in Gulval in 1930, acquired an early appreciation of art visiting Newlyn Gallery with his family. In his early career Graham worked in London writing for the Daily Express and he was responsible for one of the first Arts columns in a tabloid paper, but in 1960 he opened an antique shop in Chelsea. Inspired by trips to Italy, he displayed early furniture and antiquities in an uncluttered modern setting, a technique he later utilised in his own home. The Darks moved back to Cornwall in 1980 and at their home in Flushing, and later Truro, curated an impressive body of art and antiquities with a particular focus on Cornish artists such as Paul Feiler and Terry Frost, who both became close friends. The paintings were displayed alongside mid-century modern designer furniture by Eames, Bertoia and Magistretti, and arrangements of antiquities, thought of as ‘ensembles’ by Graham. Warm, charming, and generous hosts, they entertained their artistic circle of friends in their exquisitely arranged home, and it is a privilege for us to handle their beautiful possessions today. We hope to present them to you with as much care and consideration as the Darks used, and that those two remarkable connoisseurs would have approved.Graham Dark 1930-2015Mollie Dark 1928-2024
