Herman Gustave Herkomer (1863-1935), portrait of Harriet Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Lever Rushton, b.10th May 1844, married Arthur Henry Sykes, 17th Sep. 1868, d.17th Feb. 1923, oil on canvas, signed and dated '93 lower left, 125 x 100cm Provenance: By direct descent through the family. The eldest daughter of Harriet Ann (Sharp) and Thomas Lever Rushton (1810-1833) of Cross and Rushton Solicitors; and of Hardcastle, Cross and Co Bank, Chair of Bolton Iron works and Bolton waterworks committee, Mayor of Bolton; President of Bolton Law Society; Chair of Bolton's first school Board; Treasurer of Bolton Infirmary along with other local hospitals and convalescing charities. Married to Arthur Henry Sykes of Edgeley Mount, Stockport in 1868. She greatly enjoyed raising monies for charities which concentrated on Stockport living conditions and public health and education as well as politics, being the Dame President of the Primrose League in 1898. Mother to Herbert Rushton Sykes (married Hon. Constance Skeffington daughter of 11th Viscount of Masserene and 4th Viscount of Ferrard) and to Mabel (married Claude Campbell).

George Gower (circa 1540-1596 London), portrait of Sir Francis Willoughby (1546/7?1596), 'Who Built Wollaton House In The Year 1580', oil on board, 'Spink & Son, 93/18' label to reverse, 51 x 41cm Provenance: by descent through the Birkin family who married into the Willoughby family - Cecil Edward Willoughby born 1851 married Harriet Birkin born 1864, daughter of Sir Thomas Birkin, 1st Bt. Long understood by the family to be by Gower.Francis was the second son of Sir Henry Willoughby and his wife Anne, née Grey, and was probably born at Woodlands in Dorset.His father inherited the Wollaton and Middleton estates on the death of Sir John Willoughby in January 1548/9, but died in August the same year while fighting in Kett's Rebellion. Francis's mother had died the previous year, and Francis spent the early part of his childhood being looked after in Essex by his guardian and uncle, George Medley. His other uncle the Duke of Suffolk, guardian of Francis's elder brother Thomas, was executed in 1554 following the failed plot to place Lady Jane Grey on the throne, and Medley was incarcerated in the Tower of London for a short time, bringing more confusion to Francis's life.Francis was educated in London, Saffron Walden, and Jesus College, Cambridge. In 1559 Thomas died and Francis unexpectedly became heir to the Wollaton estate (which he came into full possession of in 1564), comprising the two principal manor houses of Wollaton and Middleton. He was knighted in 1575.

Deputy Lieutenant and J.P. of Cheshire, 3rd generation Sykes to be Mayor of Stockport; J.P. for Shropshire. He jointly ran the family business The Sykes Bleaching Works founded in 1793 leaving it after its centenary to his brother Thomas Hardcastle Sykes and moved from Edgeley to Lydham Manor near Bishops Castle. He created a thriving estate greatly benefiting the local community as well as supporting the Stockport community with the Arthur Sykes Trust. He toured America and Canada in 1884 with his wife Harriet in a well documented piece entitled From England to Sykeston.
