Circle of Dominic Serres, RA (1722-1793) Portrait of the 50-gun Dutch warship LEEUWARDEN at anchor with its fleet oil on canvas 44.5 x 60cm The present painting which traditionally has been attributed to David Kleyne (1753–1805), would appear to be a historical representation of the warship LEEUWARDEN which in 1653 acted as flagship to the famous Dutch naval hero, Vice-Admiral Cornelis de Witt, on several occasions. We are grateful to Michael Naxton for his assistance with this catalogue entry. The painting is executed in oil on a linen canvas support which has not been lined. The canvas tension is slightly slack and stretcher bar marks have formed (creating a rectangular crack pattern in the paint layers). There are a few minor knocks and undulations to the canvas with a small repair near the centre of the picture. Impact cracks are present across the surface which have been retouched. The paint layer has a uniform network of age cracks present, some of which are slightly raised at the edges but stable. The varnish is clear and even.
