Nathaniel Hone, RA (1718-1784) Portrait of Mr Charles Howard of Greystoke Enamels Signed with a monogram and dated 1750 centre right 4.2cm x 3.5cm, oval In a gilt metal fillet. Charles Howard, who succeeded to the title of Duke of Norfolk in 1777 after the death of Edward Howard, the 9th Duke. He died on 31st August 1786 at age 65. He was succeeded by his son, another Charles.. Provenance: From a descendant of the Howard family.
John Robinson after English School (16th century) Thomas Howard, 4th Duke of Norfolk, shoulder length. Inscribed verso6.3cm x 5cm, oval. In a titled gilt wood slip. After the 1562 portrait of the 25 year old Duke at Arundel Castle. Thomas Howard, 4th Duke of Norfolk (third creation), KG, Earl Marshal (1536-1572) was the son of the poet Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey, and was a second cousin of Queen Elizabeth I through her maternal grandmother, Lady Elizabeth Howard. Following his release for plotting to marry Mary, Queen of Scots, he participated in the Ridolfi plot with King Philip II of Spain to put Mary on the English throne and restore Catholicism in England, though the strength of the evidence for his participation in the Ridolfi plot is doubted by some. He was executed for treason in 1572. He is buried at St Peter ad Vincula within the walls of the Tower of London. Norfolk`s lands and titles were forfeit, although much of the estate was later restored to his sons. The title of Duke of Norfolk was restored, four generations later, to Thomas Howard.. A 19th century memorial ring, the central portrait medallion depicting a dextral profile, possibly that of Arthur Wellesley, Duke Of Wellington, embossed with the initial A in a blue enamel surround, with two colour gold foliate shoulders, finger size Q. See Scarisbrick, Diana, `Rings (Jewelry Of Power, Love And Loyalty)`, London 2007, p. 200, for a gold portrait ring of Wellington, many of which were given to admirers after his death in 1852
