Los 230

Hellenistic Period, ca. 295–275 BC.A silver coin (tetradrachm) of Alexander the Great within a modern handmade circular sterling silver setting. The obverse of the coin shows the right-profile portrait of young Hercules wearing the characteristic Nemean lion's skin headdress. The reverse depicts a seated Zeus holding an eagle and a sceptre; the legend (in Greek) reads “Alexander”. These coins were minted after the death of Alexander the Great, the king of Macedonia and conqueror of much of the known world as far east as India, in order to pay homage to him and lay claim to his legacy. The pendant makes a stunning statement piece necklace. Excellent condition; wearable. Size: L:45.6mm / W:34.9mm ; 31.47g Provenance: Private UK collection; From an old London collection formed in the 1990s.

Los 8

Ca. 100-300 AD.A black gemstone intaglio depicting a left-facing portrait of a male wearing a helmet; set in a possibly later gold ring with a round band gradually expanding to triangular-shaped shoulders, accentuated with chiseled decoration. Size: D: 18.80mm / US: 8 7/8 / UK: R 1/2; 14.73g Provenance: Private London collection; British art market 1990s.

Los 15

Ca. late 2nd century AD.A gold ring with a D-shaped design, characterized by a round-section shank that expands at the shoulders and culminates in scroll finials. These finials elegantly support an eye-shaped bezel adorned with intricate scrolls and a cutout, which serves as a captivating frame for the garnet intaglio set below. Faustina Junior, the subject of the intaglio, was a prominent figure in Roman history. She was born Annia Galeria Faustina in the year 128 AD, and she held the title of Augusta as the wife of the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius. Faustina Junior played an influential role as the Empress of Rome, and her image on the intaglio highlights her significance and power during the Roman Empire. The left-facing portrait of Faustina Junior depicted on the intaglio reflects the artistic style and attention to detail prevalent during the Roman period. The intaglio, meticulously carved into the garnet gemstone, captures the Empress's likeness, showcasing her facial features, hairstyle, and likely even her attire. Such intaglios were highly prized and served as both personal adornments and symbols of status and allegiance. Size: D: 19.15mm / US: 9 1/4 / UK: S; 7.75g Provenance: Property of a Central London gallery; formerly in a private UK collection; Ex. W. Victor Hruby collection, 1984.

Los 228

Ca. 500-400 BC.A terracotta guttos, adorned with a lustrous black glaze, presents its distinctive form. This Greek vessel features a long spout with a wide out-turned rim, allowing for controlled pouring. The guttos showcases a squat and globular body, adorned with vertically ribbed edges and resting on an elevated foot, with a portion of the foot intentionally left unglazed for visual contrast. Adding to its functionality, a single lug handle is attached to the shoulder, providing a secure grip during usage. Notably, the central disc of the guttos' body exhibits a meticulously molded low relief depicting a portrait of a female. In the realm of ancient Greek pottery, the guttos served a specific function. Its design, featuring a narrow mouth or neck, allowed for the precise pouring of liquids in drops. This particular pouring technique was commonly employed during various religious and sacrificial ceremonies, where the controlled distribution of liquid was essential. The guttos acted as a vessel for libations, ensuring that the offerings were made with precision and reverence. Size: L:95mm / W:105mm ; 145g Provenance: Property of a central London Gallery; formerly in a South English estate collection; acquired in the 1990s from Andre de Munter, Brussels, Belgium; previously in and old European collection.
