A Spanish Tale, 3 vol.,vol. 3 with half-title, 1826; Don Esteban; or, Memoirs of a Spaniard, 3 vol., half-titles, 2ff. advertisements rear of vol. 3, original boards with paper labels to spines, lower joint foot cracked vol. 1, Henry Colburn, 1825; Memoirs of Don Juan van Halen, 2 vol., second edition, portrait frontispiece (light off-setting) and 2 folding plates, 1830, the first two first editions, in original boards with paper labels to spines, uncut, the final in green morocco with very light scuffing to extremities, g.e., all Henry Colburn, 8vo (8) ⁂ Llanos Gutierrez (1795-1885), in exile from Spain, was in Rome during John Keat's convalescence there becoming a friend of the poet, and later when resident in England, eventually marrying Keat's sister, Fanny. An anglophile, Llanos began a career writing novels in the English style, publishing the two first mentioned here in quick succession. In 1833 the couple returned to Spain, where they remained.

Dudley (Robert).- Leycesters Common-wealth [Whereunto is Added Leicesters-Ghost], 2 parts in 1, engraved portrait frontispiece, woodcut head-pieces and decorative initials, contemporary and later ink ownership inscriptions to verso of frontispiece and title, trimmed, affecting some catchwords or signatures, a few times shaving pagination or printed side-note, first 2 ff. with inner margin bound tight obscuring minor portion of text, tiny hole to text of B2 and I4, occasional light spotting or staining, later panelled calf, gilt, rubbed, upper cover working loose, [Wing L969aA], small 8vo, n.p., 1641.⁂ Anonymously published attack on Elizabeth I's court and her favourite Robert Dudley, first printed in pamphlet form in Antwerp in 1584. Formerly attributed to Robert Persons, the work is now widely thought to be by a collective of exiled Catholic writers. This edition incorporates Leicesters-Ghost in verse, with separate title page and register.

Peasants' Revolt.- [Cleveland (John)] The Idol of the Clownes, Or, Insurrection of Wat the Tyler, ?first edition, bookplate, contemporary ink ownership inscription to head of title, a couple small marginal chips, occasional light dust-soiling, but a very good copy overall, later half calf, red morocco label to spine, lightly rubbed, [Wing C4672], 12mo, 1654.⁂ One of two editions of this account of the Peasants' Revolt of 1381 published in 1654, this one with 148pp., the other with 154pp. and an engraved portrait called for by ESTC.

Architecture.- Library.- Gibbs (James) Bibliotheca Radcliviana: or, a short description of the Radcliffe Library, at Oxford, first edition, engraved portrait of Radcliffe by Fourdrinier after Kneller and 21 plates, engraved portrait of Gibbs by Baron after Hogarth tipped-in to front free endpaper (from another work, and slightly different to that called for in this volume), water-stained, heavier to upper corners, mostly marginal foxing, modern calf-backed marbled boards, spine in compartments and with double claret morocco labels, spine faded, [Berlin Kat. 2334; Fowler 139; Harris 256], folio, Printed for the Author, 1747.⁂ 'Although Gibbs was ultimately appointed as architect after Hawksmoor's death in 1736, there is reason to think that it was to Hawksmoor that he owed the idea of a centrally planned domed building... Having adopted the idea he transformed Hawksmoor's essentially classical conception of a stately colonaded drum into a sophisticated piece of Italianate architecture of which Maderno or Fontana would not have disapproved' (Colvin p.400).
Beaumont (Francis) & John Fletcher. Fifty comedies and tragedies...All in one volume, second collected edition, double column, lacking portrait, title, to the reader f. and final text f. (all provided in facsimile), also final blank, B1&2 margins repaired, with loss of a few letters to B1, sig. D repairs within text, with loss supplied in neat 20th century ink hand, other mostly marginal and small repairs, with the occasional loss of the odd letter(s), a few short tears, some browning, mostly light, but heavier to a few ff., some spotting and staining, antique style calf, spine in compartments and with burgundy leather label, spine faded, [Pforzheimer 54; Wing B1582], folio, Printed by J. Macock [and H. Hills], for John Martyn, Henry Herringman, Richard Marriot, 1679. sold not subject to return. ⁂ This edition includes the first folio publication of The Two Noble Kinsmen, attributed to John Fletcher and William Shakespeare. The play was first published in quarto format in 1634, but not included in any of the of the folio editions of Shakespeare's works, or in the first folio of Beaumont and Fletcher's works (1647). This second edition includes eighteen additional plays which did not appear in the first folio edition.
Architecture.- Nathaniel Lloyd's copy.- Fréart de Chambray (Roland) A Parallel of the Antient Architecture with the Modern, 2 parts in 1, third edition, engraved portrait frontispiece, title printed in red and black and with woodcut vignette, engraved mostly full-page illustrations, woodcut and engraved head- and tail-pieces, contemporary ink ornamental drawing and writing exercises to verso of frontispiece, title (verso blank) trimmed and laid down, with loss of 1 letter of imprint, F2 piece from upper inner corner torn away, with loss of a few letters, but no loss of sense, H2 ink stain within text (still legible) and with small section excised from outer margin, stained, some foxing, lightly browned, contemporary panelled calf, rebacked, corners repaired, covers with some missing leather (but solid) and stained, [Harris 235; Keynes 77], folio, Printed by T. W. for D. Browne, J. Walthoe, B. and S. Tooke, D. Midwinter, W. Mears, and F. Clay, 1723.⁂ Fréart's influential work collects together and illustrates the essays of ten architectural masters. The second part is Evelyn's 'An Account of Architects and Architecture', 1723. Our copy with an attractive provenance. Provenance: 'Frank Caws, Architect, 1894' (ink inscription to front free endpaper); Nathaniel Lloyd, F.S.A. (1867-1933), pupil of Sir Edwin Lutyens and architectural historian (bookplate depicting his Grade I listed house Great Dixter in East Sussex).

* ETHEL WALKER (SCOTTISH b. 1941), BRIGHT SPRING FLOWERS oil on board, signedframed and under glassimage size 46cm x 50cm, overall size 67cm x 72cm Comment: probably a relatively early work by Ethel Walker and another exceptional example following several outstanding paintings by Walker to feature in our auctions over the last couple of years.Note: Ethel Walker was born in Ayrshire, Scotland, in 1941. She graduated from the Glasgow School of Art in 1964 where she had been taught by David Donaldson, once the Queen's portrait painter. Beginning her career as a teacher, by the age of twenty-seven she was a full-time artist. Walker is one of the most successful female painters working in Scotland today. Her talent in capturing the ever-changing light of the Scottish landscape is outstanding, and her subtle but strong still life paintings are highly-prized. Work is held in many public and corporate collections worldwide, including the Royal Bank of Scotland and Sara Lee Holdings. In The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction of 12th September 2021 "The Silver Table" (lot 562), a mixed media by Ethel Walker sold for £2600 (hammer). In our December 2021 auction "The Lace Cloth" achieved £3000 (hammer) and "Study in Blue" sold for £2400 (hammer) in The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction of 8th December 2022 (lot 16).
* NEIL NELSON (BRITISH b. 1977) OLEIFORA oil on board, signed with initials, titled and dated 2011 versoframedimage size 60cm x 22cm, overall size 74cm x 36.5cmNote: Born in 1977 in Berwick upon Tweed, Neil enrolled in art college to study fine art at the earliest opportunity. On the strength of an exhibition in New York he was accepted into Studio Escalier, a classical art school in the South of France and on his return to the UK he began a successful career as an artist. He has exhibited in galleries from London to Australia, and has undertaken many commissions for private collectors. He has also been featured widely in publications including the Daily Mail Weekend magazine and the New York Arts magazine, and has talked about his work at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. Neil Nelson's work is exhibited and sold in the UK through the Whitewall network of over forty galleries.

He had long been a resident of Gourock on the south bank of the River Clyde and marine activities feature prominently in his work. He is also widely regarded to be one of Scotland's leading still life painters.
