An anglophile, Llanos began a career writing novels in the English style, publishing the two first mentioned here in quick succession. In 1833 the couple returned to Spain, where they remained.

Dudley (Robert).- Leycesters Common-wealth [Whereunto is Added Leicesters-Ghost], 2 parts in 1, engraved portrait frontispiece, woodcut head-pieces and decorative initials, contemporary and later ink ownership inscriptions to verso of frontispiece and title, trimmed, affecting some catchwords or signatures, a few times shaving pagination or printed side-note, first 2 ff. with inner margin bound tight obscuring minor portion of text, tiny hole to text of B2 and I4, occasional light spotting or staining, later panelled calf, gilt, rubbed, upper cover working loose, [Wing L969aA], small 8vo, n.p., 1641.⁂ Anonymously published attack on Elizabeth I's court and her favourite Robert Dudley, first printed in pamphlet form in Antwerp in 1584. Formerly attributed to Robert Persons, the work is now widely thought to be by a collective of exiled Catholic writers. This edition incorporates Leicesters-Ghost in verse, with separate title page and register.

Architecture.- Library.- Gibbs (James) Bibliotheca Radcliviana: or, a short description of the Radcliffe Library, at Oxford, first edition, engraved portrait of Radcliffe by Fourdrinier after Kneller and 21 plates, engraved portrait of Gibbs by Baron after Hogarth tipped-in to front free endpaper (from another work, and slightly different to that called for in this volume), water-stained, heavier to upper corners, mostly marginal foxing, modern calf-backed marbled boards, spine in compartments and with double claret morocco labels, spine faded, [Berlin Kat. 2334; Fowler 139; Harris 256], folio, Printed for the Author, 1747.⁂ 'Although Gibbs was ultimately appointed as architect after Hawksmoor's death in 1736, there is reason to think that it was to Hawksmoor that he owed the idea of a centrally planned domed building... Having adopted the idea he transformed Hawksmoor's essentially classical conception of a stately colonaded drum into a sophisticated piece of Italianate architecture of which Maderno or Fontana would not have disapproved' (Colvin p.400).

Macock [and H. Hills], for John Martyn, Henry Herringman, Richard Marriot, 1679. sold not subject to return. ⁂ This edition includes the first folio publication of The Two Noble Kinsmen, attributed to John Fletcher and William Shakespeare. The play was first published in quarto format in 1634, but not included in any of the of the folio editions of Shakespeare's works, or in the first folio of Beaumont and Fletcher's works (1647). This second edition includes eighteen additional plays which did not appear in the first folio edition.

* ETHEL WALKER (SCOTTISH b. 1941), BRIGHT SPRING FLOWERS oil on board, signedframed and under glassimage size 46cm x 50cm, overall size 67cm x 72cm Comment: probably a relatively early work by Ethel Walker and another exceptional example following several outstanding paintings by Walker to feature in our auctions over the last couple of years.Note: Ethel Walker was born in Ayrshire, Scotland, in 1941. She graduated from the Glasgow School of Art in 1964 where she had been taught by David Donaldson, once the Queen's portrait painter. Beginning her career as a teacher, by the age of twenty-seven she was a full-time artist. Walker is one of the most successful female painters working in Scotland today. Her talent in capturing the ever-changing light of the Scottish landscape is outstanding, and her subtle but strong still life paintings are highly-prized. Work is held in many public and corporate collections worldwide, including the Royal Bank of Scotland and Sara Lee Holdings. In The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction of 12th September 2021 "The Silver Table" (lot 562), a mixed media by Ethel Walker sold for £2600 (hammer). In our December 2021 auction "The Lace Cloth" achieved £3000 (hammer) and "Study in Blue" sold for £2400 (hammer) in The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction of 8th December 2022 (lot 16).
