Titanic memorabilia: A White Star Lines and American Lines presentation panel to Captain James McGiffin, Marine Superintendent at Queenstown Ireland, presented to him upon leaving his position, signed by the Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer and dated 1912. The illuminated panel is inset with a portrait of the captain and with four printed vignettes including one possibly of the Titanic. Framed. 72cm x 73cm overall.The Titanic arrived in Queenstown on April 11th 1912 for final Atlantic crossing preparations. One of the last photographs known depicts Captain McGiffin with officers Lightoller and Murdoch. McGiffin had boarded Titanic to complete a final salute to the officers who were also old friends. The photograph shows the final moments where the officers were preparing to close the gangway and McGiffin return to shore on a tender.
A Royal Doulton figure 'Digger' circa 1920, designed by Ernest Light and Harry Noke in the form of a World War I New Zealand Anzac Army soldier in khaki uniform and standing at ease, his hands in his pockets, incised 'Light, Digger, Noke', lack printed mark to base, 30cm high (at fault) NOTE: The figure was modelled on a portrait of John A.A. B. Shorter, son of Doulton's Australian agents.
An undated archaistic lead steelyard weight engraved with a wheel and IX below; to the other side the letters ATIX; to the base a Roman coin with portrait of an empress, possibly Faustina the Younger. 1.1 kg, 90mm (3 1/2"). JOSEPH WRIGHT OF DERBY, ARA (1734-1797) PORTRAIT OF JOHN STAFFORD (d.1779) Half length, wearing a dark red coat and waistcoat with gold brocade, white neckcloth and a wig, bears inscription verso, oil on canvas 75 x 62cm. Illustrated: Benedict Nicolson, Joseph Wright of Derby, London and New York, 1968, I, p.220. * According to the artist's account books, John Stafford sat to Wright in Liverpool in 1769, when Stafford was visiting the city with the important Macclesfield industrialist, Charles Roe. The portrait cost £10.10. Stafford was a significant civic figure. He was deputy clerk of the manor and forest of Macclesfield on behalf of the Earl of Derby, deputy town clerk of Macclesfield and a prominent lawyer. He married Lucy Tatton, daughter of William Tatton of Withenshawe on November 21st 1734 (see the following lot). ++ Unlined; some craquelure; needs a clean

JOSEPH WRIGHT OF DERBY, ARA (1734-1797) PORTRAIT OF BARBARA, DAUGHTER OF WILLIAM AND CATHERINE TATTON (c.1706-1776) Half length, seated, wearing a dark pink dress with ivory shawl and lace bonnet, oil on canvas 74.5 x 61.5cm. * Barbara Tatton was a daughter of William Tatton and therefore John Stafford's sister-in-law (see previous lot). She was born and lived in Macclesfield. Stafford was a major patron of Wright, commissioning a portrait of his son, William Tatton and daughters, including the fine portrait of Penelope Stafford (Derby Museum and Art Gallery). The latter was also commissioned in Liverpool in 1769 and it may be that Stafford's sister-in-law, Barbara, sat to Wright at that time. ++ Lined; some associated retouching; needs a clean
JOHN LINNELL (1792-1882) PORTRAIT OF THE RT. HON. HENRY STEPHEN FOX-STRANGWAYS PC, 3rd EARL OF ILCHESTER (1787-1858) Seated half length, wearing a dark suit, a cloak draped across his lap and left arm, signed and dated 1848, oil on panel 52 x 44cm. * The sitter was educated at Oxford and became a major in the Dorset Yeomanry in 1830, rising eventually to Lieutenant Colonel. He was Lord Lieutenant of Somerset 1837-1839 and was appointed Captain of the Yeomen of the Guard under Lord Melbourne 1835-1841. He married Caroline Leonora Murray in 1812 and she bore him four children. Lord Ilchester died at Melbury House, Dorset in 1830 but his half brother William succeeded to the title as both sons had pre-deceased him. ++ Some slight surface grazes and rubbed damage; slip frame
CARVED POWDER HORN, carved with oval bust portraits titled 'CMdr PERRY' and 'CMdr MORRIS' beneath the date 1812, the reverse with portrait of a three masted war o' war above the motto 'WE SHALL CONQUER', length 25cm Footnote: Probably carved to commemorate the Battle of Lake Erie, also know as the Battle of Put-In Bay. Oliver Hazard Perry, often referred to as the Hero of the Lake, transferred his flag from USS Lawrence to USS Niagara during the battle. He was transported to the Lawrence in a rowing boat while under heavy British fire.
