RAF Father and Son Casualty groups to 873038 Cpl John Nicholl died 18-1-1954 buried Ahoghill church yard with his son group to 1821022 Sgt Air Gunner Robert Nicholl died 11-4-1944 buried Oxford Botley cemetery. Collection consists of Fathers Special Constabulary 1922 certificate RAF service documents framed casualty scroll Defence and War medals etc., with his sons framed casualty scroll portrait photo selection of letters sent to his mother whilst training casualty documents War medal etc. with photo of the father and two sons in RAF uniform, nice complete lot.

He was the son of Sir Archibald Kennedy, 1st Marquess of Ailsa and Margaret Erskine. He was given the name of John Kennedy at birth. He lived at Dun, Angus, Scotland.

IN THE MANNER OF FREDERICK FRITH (1819-1871) "Three seated figures, two ladies each holding books and a gentleman in a carver chair", cut out silhouette portrait study, bronzed, unsigned, in a maple frame, 21 cm x 33.5 cm CONDITION REPORTS Image is foxed and discoloured, the figures are going white and patchy in places. The gentleman is lifting off the paper. Each figure has some signs of rips. the mount is also foxed. Some insects under the glass. The slip gilding is rubbed and gesso is coming off. The frame has chips all over.
18TH CENTURY ENGLISH SCHOOL "Gentleman in grey wig, blue jacket, and armour breast plate", possibly Sir William Dick Baronet of Prestonfield, Edinburgh, Scotland, portrait miniature, oil on copper, unsigned, housed in a leather case, the back of the inner removeable velvet covered frame/mount bearing an inscription on paper "This miniature picture is of Sir William Dick Bt of prestonfield deceased ... immediat elder Brother to Sir Alexander Dick Bt his .... successor in the title and estate given him by his niece the Countess of Ballcarres August 3 1779" (sic), 8 cm x 6 cm CONDITION REPORTS This picture comes from a local private vendor, there is no provenance with the picture. The case leather is scratched and flaking to the top all over and especially to the hinge to the back. The silk behind the easel stand is ripped. Inside the velvet is dirty and worn to the two middle sections where it has been pressed against the miniature. The glass has small chip to the top. Under UV light through the glass the painting has a few small dark dots near the bottom of the picture and a couple of small dark dots to his hair, but otherwise the painting has an overall even slightly milky appearance. In natural light the surface of the painting has an all over textured / bobbled appearance. There is a scratch to the miniature in the right top quarter. Generally in need of a clean.
JOHN MIERS (1758-1821) "Young lady facing right with bronzed hair and dress", bears paper label verso, silhouette portrait study 7.5 cm x 6 cm, together with JOHN MIERS (1758-1821) "Lady facing to the right", silhouette portrait study, bears paper label verso, oval, 8.5 cm x 6.5 cm CONDITION REPORTS The oval picture in the square black frame has some wear and scuffs and some losses to the surface of the paint and highlights, particularly to dress, ear and hair. Back appears appears to have been removed at some stage and has various deposits and glue etc. When removed from the frame, it appears to be painted on a white plaster surface. The oval portait in the oval frame is on a fairly bright white background, frame and mounts have wear, dirt and scuffs.
IN THE MANNER OF AUGUSTIN AMANT CONSTANT FIDELE EDOUART (1789-1861) "Two young girls, one holding book with bird perched upon it, the other with a riding crop in her hand", group cut out silhouette portrait study, unsigned, 17.5 cm x 22.5 cm CONDITION REPORTS Paper is yellowed and has some marks and dirt. The cut out silhouettes have subtle painted highlighting, and the floor and shadows are a painted monochrome wash. The frame has various scuffs and chips and some separating at joins.
JOHN MIERS (1758-1821) "Young gentleman facing to the left", with paper label verso, oval, 8.5 cm x 7 cm, together with another "Lady facing to the left", heightened in bronze, silhouette portrait studies 5.5 cm x 5 cm CONDITION REPORTS Painted on plaster. Some discolouration to the area around the cravat / stock. Frame in poor order with amateur restoration. Label verso with some damage and old sellotape holding the back in which has not been removed for fear of damaging the label further. The accompanying portrait of a woman has discolouration to the paper and slight warping overall. Small surface rip to the base of the cap at rear. Frame with crazing the lacquerwork throghout.
