Erlund Hudson (Eleanor Hudson) 1911 -2012). A well worked charcoal on paper portrait of woman, probably a fellow canteen volunteer. Dated 1944 and signed twice. H.63 W.48cm Hudson was a watercolourist, etcher and designer and is notable for her depictions of women at work during the Second World War. During the Blitz she volunteered as a driver of a mobile canteen supplying tea and sandwiches for the rescue services attending bomb sites. Though not an official war artist her drawings were purchased by the War Artists’ Advisory Committee with the help of Robert Austin. Her works can be found in collection of the Imperial War Museum and British Museum. Hudson has written the sitters name ‘Bella’ but her surname is illegible. Further research is needed. Provenance: from the collection of Trevor Frankland 1931 - 2011. Frankland was president of the Watercolor Society of which Hudson was a member. She has signed and inscribed the picture to him circa 1980.
Henryk Gotlib, Polish 18901966 - Dame sur canapé, 1951; oil on canvas, signed lower right, 70 x 93 cm (ARR) Provenance:Boundary Gallery, London Note:Gotlib studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, followed by the Kunstgewerbeschule in Vienna, and the Munich Academy of Fine Arts, where he was taught by the artist Angelo Jank.He was a key member of the Formist movement in Poland, which rejected the seemingly restrictive standards of Realism, still very much dominant in early twentieth-century Polish art, in favour of an expressionism which was heavily influenced by figures such as Egon Schiele and Max Beckmann. The looser, more fluid application of paint which defined Gotlibs best works are strikingly evident in these pieces, which therefore serve as excellent examples of his style and approach.Works by Gotlib are in a number of prominent collections, including those of the National Portrait Gallery, the Tate Gallery, and the Courtauld Gallery in London, the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, and the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff, among others. With thanks to the late Agi Katz for her assistance with the cataloguing of this work.Condition Report: This work is framed and unexamined out of the frame. There are minor scuffs and marks to the frame. The frame is slightly warped, and there is some light cockling to the canvas. There is evidence of damage to the reverse of the canvas, which is visible from the recto, with corresponding paint loss and a small hole towards the left centre of the canvas. There is further evidence of creasing/scratching with corresponding paint loss in a vertical line towards the right edge of the canvas, alongside other areas of light scratching and paint loss to the surface of the canvas. There are marks of dirt to the surface of the work, and some pin holes towards the left and right edges of the canvas. Otherwise this work appears to be in fair condition overall.
