Michael Dahl (Swedish, 1659-1743) Portrait of Gilbert, 4th Earl of Coventry, full length in ermine trimmed ceremonial robes and holding a coronetoil on canvassigned243 x 147cm Gilbert Coventry, 4th Earl of Coventry, succeeded to his title unexpectedly in 1712, two years before Dahl painted this lavish portrait. He was the father-in-law of Sir William Carew, 5th Baronet, who married Anne, the Earl's only daughter and heir, in 1713.Earl of Coventry is a title that has been created twice in the Peerage of England. The first creation for the Villiers family was created in 1623 and took its name from the city of Coventry. It became extinct in 1687.
