Sir David Wilkie, R.A., 1785-1841 Portrait of Admiral Walker, Commander of the Turkish Fleet signed, inscribed and dated Nov 27th 1840 pencil and watercolour heightened with bodycolour 43x30cm.; 17x11.75in. As the introduction to Sir David Wilkie's Sketches in Turkey, Syria and Egypt 1840-1841 suggests, "Wilkie in realising his object, would have shed a new light upon scriptural painting, for he was perfectly correct in assuming that the personal characteristics of the nations of sacred history are to be approached only through those of their modern representatives...and laboured so devotedly to their fulfilment." In 1939 the sitter in the current picture, who serving as Captain of H.M.S. Vanguard, was promoted to Commander of the Turkish Navy as part of the re-organisation led by the Turkish Ambassador with the assistance of the British Government. The current works were some of the last that Wilkie was to produce as he died onboard the Orient on 1st June 1841 whilst retuning home from this visit to the Holy Cities, "cut off before he could give to the world the matured fruits of his pilgrimage." Provenance Messers Graves and Warmsley, London Literature Sir David Wilkie's Sketches in Turkey, Syria and Egypt 1840-1841, London, 1843, pl. V
Sir David Wilkie, R.A., 1785-1841 Portrait of the infant daughter of Admiral Walker, Commander of the Turkish Fleet signed, inscribed and dated 1840 pencil and watercolour 31.5x23.5cm.; 12.5x9.25in. "In Constantinople, the dress of the children is striking, from that of its resemblance to that of the Turkish women...there is generally no distinction in dress between the child of three years old and the woman of mature years." This charming work provides and interesting display of traditional Turkish dress and the customs specifically relating to the costume of children. The introduction to Sir David Wilkie's Sketches in Turkey, Syria and Egypt 1840-1841 describes the present work as "of remarkable beauty, and one on which the accomplished artist has bestowed much care. It is not to be surpassed by any similar sketches of the greatest masters." Provenance The Collection of R. S. Holford Esq. Literature Sir David Wilkie's Sketches in Turkey, Syria and Egypt 1840-1841, London, 1843, pl. VI
Harrington Mann, 1865-1937 portrait of an eton boy signed and dated 1895 oil on canvas 35.5x30.5cm.; 14x12in. The portrait appears to depict the ten-year-old Guy Colin Campbell, who became the 4th Baron Campbell of Cammo. Guy attended both Eton and St. Andrews schools before enrolling in the 60th Rifles, serving in WWI and WWII.
Jean-Franois Millet, French 1814-1875 portrait of a young boy pastel on paper laid down on canvas 47.5x40cm.; 18.25x15.25in. Jean-Franois Millet executed the present work early in his career as a portraitist, most probably around 1840-1842 whilst living in Cherbourg. His portraits executed in pastel during the 1840s have only relatively recently returned to light primarily because their authorship had long gone unrecognised. Alfred Senier, Millet's first biographer, identified this issue in the 1870s suggesting that the artist worked quickly during the 1840s under intense pressure from patrons and often left his works unsigned. The thick application of pigment points towards the eighteenth century pastel style which formed a significant part of Millet's early inspiration, positioning the work early in the artist's career. Provenance Anonymous sale, Galerie Stuker, Bern, June 13, 1952, Lot 3823 Private collection, Bern
