An early 19th century maritime interest, watercolour on paper, featuring what appears to be an entirely fictitious representation of ‘Nelson Toomb’. The tomb is shown as having a pointed pinnacle onto which is painted a portrait of Nelson. On the square column is a laurel wreath with date of October 21st 1805 within, which represents Nelson’s demise at Trafalgar. Flanking the monument are Poseidon and Britannia. In the background are 2 vessels, one of which likely represents HMS Victory. The painting is framed and glazed, with a label verso stating that the picture was ‘taken from inside the lid of a Napoleonic prisoner of war straw work box, circa 1805’. It also adds that that it was framed in 1995. A naive but charming piece of prisoner of war work. Approximately 36.2cm x 22.9cm. Condition: very good. Good strong colours to the picture area, with no apparent damage or foxing to the paper. The frame is made in an antique style, and aside from a a few indentations to the wood, is in good condition.

Attributed to Pieter Nason (Dutch, 1612-1688) Portrait of a noble woman wearing a pearl set crown and elaborate embroidered dressoil on canvas80 x 63cm**conditionreport**Oil on canvas relined many years ago, canvas remains tight, paint looks rather dirty with a fine craquelure scattered throughout which is just starting to lift most notably on her forehead and has some flaking in the lower right corner, housed in probably the original carved giltwood frame which is now a little dusty and tatty. Formerly attributed to Willem Wissing, Christie's stencil number 379L? to the stretcher.Provenance: Formerly the property of the vendors’ great-great-grandparent the Abyssinian explorer Mansfield Parkyns (1823-1894), who had it reframed in the mid C19th on inheriting it from his father – so it is believed to have been in the one family for about 200 years. The painting was cleaned in March-May 1926 by Ayerst Hooker Buttery, who identified it as being a late C17th portrait of a Queen of Bohemia by Daniel Mytens (presumably D.M. the Younger 1644-1688). Mr Buttery’s letter (which can be included in the sale) does not say why he concluded this. More recently it has been suggested that it could alternatively be by Pieter Nason.PLEASE NOTE:- Prospective buyers are strongly advised to examine personally any goods in which they are interested BEFORE the auction takes place. November 2000, Lot 48.Literatur:Clare Le Corbeiller: European and American Snuff Boxes, New York 1966.
