An oil on board, portrait of Samuel Redgate reportedly. 7¼ by 9ins. In a gilt frame. Samuel Redgate 27th July 1810 – 13th April 1851 was a professional cricketer who played for Nottingham Cricket Club at Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club from 1830s until 1846 and was a renowned right arm fast bowler amongst the most feared of the period. It is a generally held conclusion that the speed of his bowling led to the introduction of batting pads with some of his bowling having caused serious leg injuries. Redgate played a total of 79 first class matches and took 426 known wickets.

William Lionel Wylie RA (1851-1931), Portrait orientated study of seagulls in the mouth of Portsmouth Harbour looking towards the Gosport Haslar fortifications, signed and dated "W.L Wylie," "1922," oil on canvas, in giltwood and gesso frame, 106cm x 68cm. This picture was painted from Wylie's harbour home, Tower House, and is, in our opinion, a highly personal picture. Aged 72 when the picture was completed, Wylie is paying tribute to the seagulls that have kept him company on painting trips for many years. The unusual landscape orientation of the canvas emphasizing the flight path of the incoming birds and leading the viewer to the main focal point, the wooden piles protruding from the sea outside the artist’s harbour-side home.

Samuel Wale (1721-1786), Twelve drawings illustrating scenes for publications of A New History of England, one with inscription 'S. Wale' (on the verso of the mount), two dated '1705' and '1785', variously inscribed with titles two pencil and grey wash, ten pencil, pen and black ink and grey wash, one with Pro Patria watermark, unframed, the largest 18.5cm x 11cm.; and three prints after the drawings (12) Illustrated Lot Note: A founder member of the Royal Academy and appointed its first Professor of Perspective, Wale is chiefly remembered as one of the most prolific book illustrators of the 18th Century, producing designs for more than 100 publications. Wale's range was broad: his oeuvre included dense allegorical work, extensive religious illustrations and native historical scenes. At both the Society of Artists and the Royal Academy, Wale showed pen and wash drawings, including original designs for book illustrations with over half of his exhibited works depicting scenes of British history. He executed more than 150 different designs for various Histories of England, including W.H. Montague's New and Universal History of England (2 vols., circa 1771) and G.F. Raymond's New, Universal and Impartial History of England of 1789. Inscriptions on the present drawings indicate their subject matter and often also the publication in which they were to be included, such as 'The Portrait of Anne of Cleves/brought before Henry VIII' (illustrated) and 'by Wale/Raymond's History of England/S. Wale/King Henry II serving the first dish/to his son Henry after his Coronation' (illustrated). In Montague's publication the artist was described as 'the celebrated Wale' on title-pages, and his narrative scenes of dramatic and sometimes obscure episodes in British history enlivened the texts.
