Sargent 1905."Victoria Sackville-West's ink inscription in French, notes that the book was presented to her by Sargent whilst she sat for a portrait. It appears that Sackville-West disliked the finished portrait so much that it was destroyed, and replaced with another in charcoal which was thought sufficiently flattering.

O'Casey (Sean) The Silver Tassie, first edition, signed presentation inscription from the author to Joe Cummins on endpaper, portrait frontispiece, light browning to endpapers, original cloth-backed boards, spine a little browned, 8vo, 1928.⁂ Joseph Cummins worked as a surgeon at the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital in Dublin where O'Casey was treated for an ulcerated cornea when in his early twenties. Cummins took a personal interest in the young writer and the two remained friends afterwards.
EDWARD VIII: (1894-1972) King of the United Kingdom January – December 1936. Later Duke of Windsor. An excellent A.L.S., Edward, as Duke of Windsor, two pages, 8vo, Hotel Meurice, Paris, 13th December 1938, to Madame Andre Maurois. The Duke thanks his correspondent for her letter and for sending a copy of her husband’s biography of Lord Byron, continuing ‘Harold Nicholson’s clever paragraph on the portrait postcard is like a “hors d’oeuvre”, whetting one’s appetite for deeper study of his brilliantly romantic if unconventional Englishman’. He concludes by remarking that he and the Duchess both enjoyed her luncheon party and look forward to seeing them both chez Monsieur Prouvost that evening. Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by the Duke and signed by him with his initial (‘E’) to the lower left corner. A letter of fine content and association. About EXSimone de Caillavet (1894-1978) French Woman of Letters, second wife of French Author Andre Maurois (1885-1967). Caillavet was the granddaughter of Anatole France’s mistress Leontine Arman de Caillavet.Lord Byron (1788-1824) English Poet, a leading figure in the Romantic movement.Jean Prouvost (1885-1978) French Businessman, Media owner and Politician. Prouvost built and owned various publications including Paris Match.
BRITISH PRIME MINISTERS: A good United States First Day Cover issued in honour of Winston S. Churchill and featuring his portrait individually signed by four British Prime Ministers of the 20th century comprising Anthony Eden ('Avon', 1955-57), Harold Macmillan (1957-63), Alec Douglas-Home (1963-64) and Harold Wilson (1964-70, 1974-76). Postmarked 13th May 1965. Signed by each in bold blue or black inks with their names alone to clear areas. Together with a small selection of signed pieces (2), letterhead (1) and signed photographs (2) by various British Prime Ministers of the 20th century comprising H. H. WOOD NATALIE: (1938-1981) American Actress. A good, early vintage signed and inscribed 7 x 9 photograph of the teenage Wood in an attractive head and shoulders pose. The original Warner Bros. publicity portrait was issued for the film Rebel Without a Cause (1955) in which Wood starred in the role of Judy alongside James Dean as Jim Stark. Signed in bold turquoise fountain pen ink across a light area of the background, ‘To dear Charles! Wishing you success and happiness always! Sincerely, Natalie Wood’. Signed photographs of Wood associated with this cult film, at an early stage in her career, are extremely rare and desirable. Slightly irregularly trimmed to the white borders and with one very minor crease to the lower left corner, only very minimally affecting one letter of the signature, G Natalie Wood was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for her performance in Rebel Without a Cause.
MILLER GLENN: (1904-1944) American Musician and Bandleader of the Swing Era, especially popular during World War II. Vintage signed 8 x 10 photograph of Miller standing in a three quarter length pose playing his trombone. Photograph by James J. Kriegsmann and issued as a publicity portrait for Glenn Miller and his orchestra by Bluebird Recording Artists. Signed by Miller with his name alone in fountain pen ink to a largely clear area of the image. An ink annotation in the hand of a collector to the verso indicates that the photograph was signed on 29th February 1942. TCHAIKOVSKY PYOTR ILYICH: (1840-1893) Russian Composer. A good vintage signed and inscribed sepia cabinet photograph by Tchaikovsky, the image depicting the composer seated in a half length pose. Signed in bold, dark fountain pen ink to the lower photographer's mount and with a three line inscription in Cyrillic to Margarita Aleksandrovna Eikhenvald, dated 11th November 1891, in his hand. With a small blind embossed coat of arms to the lower photographer's mount. Traces of former mounting to the verso and with a few vertical and horizontal cracks to the image and mount (professionally repaired and only especially visible when viewed at an angle). A rare signed portrait with a good association, G Margarita Aleksandrovna Eikhenvald (1866- ) Russian Vocalist. Eikhenvald was born in Moscow, the daughter of the noted harpist Ida Eikhenvald. The singer worked with the Bolshoi Theatre (1899-1901) and the Tiflis Opera in Georgia (1901-17). Following the Russian Revolution in 1917 she emigrated to France and was living there in the 1940s.
CHAGALL MARC: (1887-1985) Russian-born French Artist. An excellent original blue pen and ink self-portrait drawn and signed by Chagall, one page, oblong 8vo, Saint-Paul-de-Vence, 1972. Chagall has penned an attractive head and shoulders self-portrait, with one hand outstretched and his hair heightened in light green watercolour. Signed (‘Marc Chagall’) and dated in blue ink with a large signature across the centre of the page. Professionally matted in white cloth with a gold coloured border and framed and glazed in a handsome gilt wooden frame to an overall size of 20.5 x 17. Original drawings signed by Chagall of this quality are rare and desirable. EX
DICKENS CHARLES: (1812-1870) English Novelist. Autograph envelope signed (‘Charles Dickens’) addressed in his hand to R. H. Horne Esquire at Fallon Lodge, Finchley and bearing a red post mark dated 1849. Signed by Dickens to the lower left corner. Matted in grey beneath a portrait of Dickens removed from a book and framed and glazed in a plain black frame to an overall size of 10 x 15. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, otherwise VG Richard Henry Horne (1802-1884) English Poet and Critic, most famous for his poem Orion.
DURRELL LAWRENCE: (1912-1990) British Novelist. A.L.S., Larry Durrell, one page, 4to, Alexandria, 16th February n.y. (early-mid 1940s), to Maro [Vatimbella]. Durrell writes, in full, 'Many thanks for letting me have this to copy: I don't know whether you want the original back or not but I am sending it in case you do. If not please destroy'. Together with an A.N.S., Larry, on one side of his personal printed visiting card from the publicity section of the British Embassy (the printed text crossed through by Durrell), n.p. (Egypt) n.d. (early-mid 1940s), to [Maro Vatimbella], in pencil, stating, in full, 'Thank you for Rilke. It is lovely' and also including a second A.N.S., Larry, on his personal printed visiting card (the name Lawrence crossed through and replaced by Larry in Durrell's hand), n.p. (Egypt), n.d. (early-mid 1940s), to [Maro Vatimbella], in feint pencil, stating, in full, 'I think this is yours from your little wristlet'. The letter is slightly unevenly torn to the right of the upper edge, not affecting the text or signature, and the second of the notes has light overall age toning and foxing. G (1) to VG, 3 Maro Vatimbella (1919-1989) Egyptian-born Greek Artist and the inspiration for Durrell's poem A Portrait of Theodora (1955). Durrell served as a press attache to the British Embassies in both Cairo and Alexandria during World War II.
KELLAR HARRY: (1849-1922) American Magician. A good, scarce A.L.S., Harry Kellar, two pages, 8vo, Los Angeles, California, 21st February 1921, to ‘My dear Ducrot’, on Kellar’s attractive colour personal printed stationery featuring his portrait with two demons resting on his shoulders, one of whom whispers into his ear. Kellar makes a request of his correspondent, ‘Please send copies of “Miracle Mongers &c” to the following, and place one of my cards in each book’ and continues to provide the names and addresses of seven individuals including John Hamburger, The Misses Curren, Joseph Coyne, Harry Haldeman etc., located in Pennyslvania, Texas. Massachusetts and California etc. The magician concludes by enclosing his payment of $22.05 for the books and postage. Some very light, extremely minor creasing and a couple of pencil annotations, presumably in the hand of Ducrot, relating to Kellar’s payment. VG Miracle Mongers and their Methods: A complete expose of the modus operandi of fire eaters, heat resisters, poison eaters, venomous reptile defiers, sword swallowers, human ostriches, strong men, etc. was a book written by fellow magician Harry Houdini and first published in 1920.
